March Madnessby Morgan Robson
Conference is beginning around the country as March Madness begins. It's time to look ahead to the madness in San Antonio. Selection Sunday will take place on March 11 this year. This is where the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee decides which 68 teams have made the field for this year's tournament. Since the tournament began in 1939, UCLA has the most titles with 11. Kentucky has eight national titles; North Carolina has six. Kansas Jayhawks from Lawrence are projected to be the number one seed in the overall bracket over Xavier. Penn State and Nebraska are needing a win Friday in the Big Ten tournament at Madison Square Garden. The Lions have to knock off Ohio State to have a chance at the tournament. Nebraska might have to beat Michigan. The bubble could be reduced even more over the coming days in the final weekend of the regular season. It’s a busy time around the NCAA schools. BUSY Week at MHSby Morgan Robson
Looking around MHS this week you will see kids with great school spirit. It is homecoming week around MHS. Monday is “Generation Day”, cheerleaders gave each grade a specific generation. Tuesday is “Career Day”, walking around school, I have seen many different career paths. Wednesday is the best day of all, “Pajama Day.” Most students will definitely enjoy that. Thursday is “Favorite Team Day”, support your favorite high school, college, or pro team. Friday is “Black & Gold Day”, along with the Wildcats taking on the Minneola Wildcats. The girls team played the Minneola Wildcats in the Cimarron tournament, back in December where the Moscow Lady Wildcats lost to them in the 3rd/4th place game. The boys did not play the Wildcats at the Cimarron tournament. The games on Friday will start at 6 PM, first girls then boys game to follow. The Junior Class will be having concessions; the concessions money goes towards their senior trip next year. A pep rally will be held in the Old Gym at 2:45 PM. The pep rally will consist of homecoming candidate games, school wide games, cheering, and speeches from basketball teams. Candidates for 2018 Winter Homecoming are as follows: Senior Morgan Robson, Senior Brittney Stuckey, Senior Caitlyn McIntire, Senior Monica Gonzalez, and Junior Morgan Lahey; boys candidates: Senior Kage Allen, Senior Jaylen Mendez, Senior Gaby Granillo, Senior Bryan Erives, and Senior Javier Marquez. Crowning for Homecoming will follow the boys’ game. Good luck this week, Wildcats! Happy Ending for the Town of Houstonby Javier Marquez
Game Three: Game Three was in the city of Houston, Texas. The Astros had just tied the World Series 1-1 after beating the Dodgers six to seven. The Astros didn’t waste much time on Game Three and took a four to zero lead in the bottom of the second. The Astros allowed just three runs and they added one more to finish the game, three to five, and taking a 2-1 lead in the World Series. Game Four: Game Four was in Houston just like like Game Three. The game was a close one until the top of the ninth. It was one to one. The Dodgers were up to bat, and they needed some runs and they did get that. They scored five runs in the top of the ninth and only allowed the Astros to score one run to take Game Four and tie the series 2-2. Game Five: This game was absolutely crazy and exciting! Extra innings? Dingers? A lot of runs? Yes, yes, and yes! The final score was 12-13 with the Astros winning thanks to Alex Bregman’s walkoff single. The game didn’t end until late at night. Both teams played great. Game Six: The Astros could win their first World Series in franchise history with a win over the Dodgers in Game Six. The Dodgers had to win in order to force Game Seven. The game was at Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. The Houston Astros took a 1-0 lead on the top of the third inning. The Dodgers weren’t going down without a fight. They scored two runs on the sixth inning and got one insurance run on the seventh. The Dodgers won 3-1 and forced Game Seven in the World Series. Game Seven: “Game Seven”--the two best words in sports. Game Seven was at Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. Whoever won this game would be crowned Major League Baseball World Series Champions. The Astros have never won a World Series ever. The last time the Los Angeles Dodgers won one was 29 years ago. Both teams were desperate for a World Series title. The starting pitchers would be Verlander for the Astros and Darvish for the Dodgers. The Houston Astros wasted no time on Game Seven and scored two runs in the first. Then they came back to score three runs in the next inning. The Dodgers were behind 5-0 and were getting scared. On the sixth inning they managed to score one run, but the Astros defense didn’t allow another single run. The Houston Astros were finally World Series Champions! Centerfielder George Springer was crowned World Series MVP. After everything that the city of Houston has had to face from the hurricane that struck in August, the city was happy to see their team be champions. The Prediction: In June 2014, Sports Illustrated writer, Ben Ritter wrote an article that the Houston Astros would win they 2017 World Series. In 2014, the Houston Astros were considered one of the worst teams in MLB. They had three straight seasons losing 105 or more games and when the article came out, they had a record of 36-48. Ben Ritter made the prediction that they would win it in 2017 by looking at future draft picks and management. MLB Playoffsby Javier Marquez
Major League Baseball playoffs started on October 3, 2017 with the Minnesota Twins facing the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card round. The Yankees won that game to eliminate the Twins 8-4. On October 4, 2017 in the National League Wild Card round, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Colorado Rockies 11-8 to eliminate the Rockies. In the ALDS it was the Boston Red Sox against the Houston Astros. The Houston Astros took game one 8-2. On game two, the Astros won again 8-2. Game three the Red Soxs bounced back and defeated the Astros 10-3. Game four the Astros won 5-4 and eliminated the Red Soxs for the playoffs. On the other side of the ALDS playoff bracket, it was the New York Yankees against the Cleveland Indians. The Cleveland Indians made it to the World Series last year and were so close to winning until they blew a 3-1 lead. Game one the Indians didn’t waste any time and took game one with the final score of 4-0. Game two the Yankees put up a fight but came short losing 8-9. The Indians now had a 2-0 lead against the New York Yankees and needed just one more win to eliminate them and move on, but the Yankees weren’t going down easy. Game three the Yankees beat the Indians in a close one 1-0 and in game four 7-3. Now the series was tied and it was all up to whoever played the best during game five. The Yankees started the night right by their first batter, shortstop Didi Gregorius hitting a home run. The Yankees won 7-3 and eliminated the Indians from the play offs. Sadly for the Indians, they not only blew a 3-1 lead in the playoffs last year, but they also blew a 2-0 lead this year, extending their championship drought to 69 years. The New York Yankees now had to face the Houston Astros in the ALDS. The Astros won the first game with the final score of 2-1. During game two, the Astros again defeated the Yankees with a final score of 2-1 by a walk off double from Carlos Correa as he brought in Jose Altuve to score the winning run. Game three will be on October 16, 2017 in New York. In the NLDS, the Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0. The final score of game one was 9-5, game two was 8-5, and game three was 3-1. The other two teams in the NLDS were in a good battle to advance to the next round. The defending champions, Chicago Cubs took on the Washington Nationals. The Cubs took game one, shutting out the Nationals 3-0. The Nationals answered back during game two defeating the Cubs 6-3. Game three was a very close one, but the defending champs came up on top with a final score of 2-1. Game four was all Nationals. The Nationals had to win to force a game five. The Nats shut out the Cubs in a 5-0 win. Game five was the game to win. It was either win or go home. Game five ended in a close one with the Chicago Cubs defeating the Washington Nationals 9-8, to eliminate them from the playoffs and move on to the NLCS. The defending champs now had to face the Los Angeles Dodgers who have been a hot team this season, especially during the playoffs. Game one the Dodgers won with a final score of 5-2. The game was close until the seventh inning when the Dodgers were up by just one run and that’s when they got a couple of insurance runs to finish the game. Game two was a close and crazy game. The game was tied at 1-1 since the fifth inning. That was until the ninth when Dodgers’ third baseman, Justin Turner came up to bat with two outs and two runners on base. Justin Turner watched the first pitch slider go for a ball and on the second pitch was a nice 92 mph fastball down the middle for Turner to give a ride, and that’s what he did. Turner won the game with a walk-off three run home run to take game two of the NLCS. After the game, Justin Turner said, “That’s my first walk-off home run.” Game three will be on October 17, 2017 in Chicago. NFL Players Not Standing for the National Anthem by Javier Marquez Last year NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started his protest by sitting down during the national anthem. He started sitting down to protest police brutality against people of color and the criminal justice system. Kaepernick did this during the first two games of the 2016 NFL preseason. On a Saturday night before the third game of the 2016 preseason game, teammate Eric Reid approached Kaepernick to discuss how he could get involved, but he also wanted to to make a more powerful and positive impact on the social justice movement. They talked for hours and even visited Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, and he came to a conclusion that Kaepernick and Reid should kneel during the national anthem, rather than sit. Kaepernick and Reid did that the next day during the national anthem and kept doing that the rest of the season. During the 2016 season more NFL players started following Kaepernick’s lead and started kneeling during the national anthem. Colin Kaepernick ended up getting released from the San Francisco 49ers and has not signed with a team yet. Now the 2017 NFL season has started, and there are still players kneeling during the national anthem. On September 23, 2017, President Donald Trump was in Alabama to campaign for a Republican senate candidate and said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b--- off the field right now’ Out. He’s fired. HE’S FIRED!” NFL players and owners were not happy with what the President of the United States said. The next day during NFL Sunday almost every team had players either sit, kneel, or lock arms while standing during the national anthem. The Pittsburgh Steelers stayed in the locker room during the national anthem, except for one player, Alejandro Villanueva who served for the United States Army. Villanueva got so much respect on social media and ended up being the top selling jersey on Monday. In a press conference Alejandro Villanueva said, “People who are taking a knee are not saying anything negative about the military. They are not saying anything negative about the flag. They’re just trying to protest the fact that there are some injustices in America. And for people to stand for the national anthem, it doesn’t mean that they don’t believe in these racial injustices. They are just trying to do the right thing.” Hours later on Sunday night, Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones- who has told his players and staff of the Cowboys that if they sat or kneeled during the national anthem and didn’t stand up with their hand over their heart, that they would be fired- joined his team and before the national anthem as a team, they kneeled and right before the national anthem started, they stood up and locked arms. The 5-Second Ruleby Morgan Lahey
For a very long time now, people have always thought that they could eat food after it has been dropped on the floor for only five seconds. Some people do not do this; they think that the floor is very unclean, and they do not eat food that has been dropped on the floor for five seconds or less. Other people don’t mind and eat the food if it has only been on there for five seconds. Scientists are now weighing in on it. A scientist by the name of Anthony Hilton is speaking about it. He is a professor at Aston University. Anthony is going to speak about it at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, England. Hilton is also a professor in microbiology, which is tiny organisms, which includes germs. The Big Bang Fair is a huge celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math for many people. It is the largest celebration of it’s kind. Anthony Hilton has said that some kinds of different foods can be on the ground for only a few seconds and pick up dirt and germs. Hilton has said that sandwiches, potato chips, dry toast, and cookies can be on the ground for up to thirty minutes and not do any harm to the person who eats it. Anthony also said that candy, pasta, and doughnuts are not the same as sandwiches, potato chips, dry toast, and cookies. Candy, pasta, and doughnuts can pick up many germs and dirt particles in less than five seconds. He has also found out that carpet is not as dirty as tiled floors. Jillian Clarke is the one who started the 5-second rule in 2003 to attract attention from the media. He dropped some gummy bears on the floor. He dropped it on two kinds of tile. One rough and one smooth tile. The gummy bear on the rough tile picked up more bacteria than the gummy bear that got dropped on the smooth tile. Rutgers University has done many studies about the 5-second rule. They said that it is more important to worry about how dirty the floor may be, instead of worrying about how long the food has been on the ground. More health problems can be caused by many other things besides eating food that has been on the ground for a short amount of time. Studies have showed that food that has been dropped on the floor has hardly ever caused any health problems to anyone who has eaten the food. Flooding in San Jose by Morgan Lahey
There has been many heavy rains for the past two weeks in San Jose, California. The heavy rains have been pushing the water levels too high. The heavy rains have made reservoirs in Northern California reach dangerous levels. People have been warned that the reservoirs could overflow. The heavy rains sent a lot of water into the Coyote Creek. This creek runs right through the middle of San Jose, where there are millions of people. The creek has been overflowing in a lot of different places. More than a hundred homes were flooded. Since there has been many homes that have been flooded, it has started an evacuation. More than 14,000 people have been evacuated. This has been the worst flooding in a century. Many of the people are angry that they were not warned earlier. The city officials have said that even they were surprised by the flooding. The officials found out that the information that they had from the Coyote Creek was not at all accurate. They said that they will no doubt do things different next time. “The creek spilled over the banks faster and higher than anybody expected,” said city spokesperson David Vossbrink. Many people had to be rescued by boats. These people said that they were very, very surprised that they didn’t get an earlier warning from anyone that it was going to be that bad. Louis Silva said, “They didn’t say it was going to go up as high as it did.” “They should’ve put the footwork in to show the urgency of the situation.” said Louis Silva. Many of the people who had to evacuate hurriedly put their valuables in their cars. A resident that decided to stay instead of evacuate said, “It was scary, being in a drought for all these years, you don’t think you are in danger of a flood.” Some of the residents put up walls of sandbags in front of their homes. The water had burst through the sandbag walls. There have been evacuation centers set up in two community centers. There have been up to three hundred people stay overnight. There has also been two high schools that have been set up as overnight shelters, also. Many of the roads have been forced to close. The creek is no longer rising, but it is now too late for some of the residents. The National Weather Service said, “This is a once-in-a-hundred-year flood event.” 2017 NBA All-Star Gameby Javier Marquez

Donald Trump is planning on building a wall with Mexico. Donald Trump believes that this wall will keep people from crossing the border illegally. He recently signed an executive action to start making plans to build this wall. An executive order is official documents that the president uses. Executive orders are also informal moves. In a few months, Donald Trump hopes that they will be able to start planning to build the wall. He does not want to waste any time. Donald Trump says that he plans on having Mexico pay the United States back for the wall. He has promised that he will not use the taxpayers money. The wall will be billions of dollars. Trump wants to start working on construction as soon as possible. The building of this wall was one of Donald Trump’s biggest promises in his campaign. Donald Trump has also signed two other documents on immigration recently. He went to Homeland Security to sign these documents. The United States cities that do not follow the nation’s immigration laws will probably get their money from the government taken away. There will be more holding centers for illegal immigrants now that Trump has signed these two new documents. Trump said that he blames people who are here illegally for taking away jobs from Americans. He thinks that these illegal immigrants are a safety concern for other people who are here. This is one of the first steps in Donald Trump’s executive actions. He wants to fulfill all of his campaign promises, especially on immigration. Since Donald Trump is making these actions, it might create a big problem from the immigration rights’ community. This group has said that Donald Trump has been exaggerating problems to get support from other people and to turn them against other immigrants and refugees. Donald Trump is anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim. There have been many hateful things said about both of these groups. Marielena Hincapie is the head of the National Immigration Law Center. This center helps immigrants know their rights. She said, “Chaos and destruction will be the outcome.” Spicer has said that they want the Department of Homeland Security to limit money to cities who do not report undocumented immigrants to the national government. Obama administration has shut this down because they think it is being abused. There are many other programs that are being watched. Infants Should Be Exposed to Peanut Based Foodsby Morgan Lahey
There is some new advice about peanut based foods and how you can lower the chances of your kids becoming allergic to them. You should expose your babies to peanut based foods way before they have their first birthday. Many parents have been told not to do this before. With this advice it may help protect kids from developing a terrible allergy to peanuts. This advice is based off new research from the National Institutes of Health. This advice helps drop the chances of babies becoming allergic to peanut based foods. The doctors say that if you know your child may have a severe reaction to peanut based foods you should give your baby a taste of peanut based foods in the doctor's office. Some babies may be at a higher risk if they have eczema, a severe skin rash, or egg allergies. If your child has any of these things, they should probably have a check-up before they try any peanut based foods. Doctors say that you should not give your baby whole peanuts or a bunch of peanut butter. They could possibly choke. There are peanut flavored snacks that your baby can try or water-downed peanut butter. You can start giving your babies peanut based foods around four to six months old. It all depends on whether or not, they are at high risk of developing the food allergy. “We are on the cusp of hopefully being able to prevent a large number of cases of peanut allergy,” said Dr. Matthew Greenhawt. Dr. Matthew Greenhawt has studied allergies. He is also a member of the NIH-appointed panel that wrote the guidelines. Another doctor that works with the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said, “It’s an important step forward.” Around two percent of the United States kids have to avoid a lot of types of peanut based foods. If they do not avoid these foods, they may have a life-threatening reaction. For many years pediatricians have been warning parents not to give their children peanut based foods until they are three years or older. Even after this advice was dropped parents were still afraid to let their babies have peanut based foods. The doctors are urging people to give their babies peanut based foods so that their babies do not develop a peanut allergy. Many parents should use this advice. Zika Virusby Morgan Lahey The Zika Virus is usually spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The mosquitoes can bite during the day and night. Right now there is no vaccine for the Zika Virus. The Zika Virus has been reported to first be in Brazil, then Latin America, and is now eventually reaching the United States. It is also in 59 other countries. The Zika Virus can be transmitted to pregnant women. The virus can cause birth defects. One of the main birth defects from the Zika Virus is microcephaly, which causes an abnormally small head and small brain. Some other birth defects are blindness, seizures, and many other congenital defects. The Zika Virus, in rare cases, may cause paralysis. Authorities are telling pregnant women to avoid traveling to places where the Zika Virus is active. Women who have had the Zika Virus and then got pregnant are usually immune to the virus, so the baby can not be harmed from it. The C.D.C. thinks you should wait eight weeks after having the virus before you try to conceive. There are many symptoms from the Zika Virus. Some of them are fevers, rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headaches. These symptoms should not last more than a week. The Zika Virus is usually pretty mild. There is really no certain treatment. According to WHO, if you get the Zika Virus you should drink tons of water, get a lot of rest, and treat fevers and pains with common medicine. If your symptoms get bad, you should go see a doctor for care and advice. Another thing you should do is try and protect yourself against the Zika Virus. A few things you can do are wear light colored clothing that covers most of your skin, close your doors and windows, use mosquito nets, and wear insect repellent. The morning of September 11, 2001, in New York City, New York, it was a normal day, at least until 8:45 a.m, when American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked by Mohammed Atta and flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:03 a.m. United Airlines Flight 175 left Boston, Massachusetts, and was hijacked and hit the South Tower. It wasn’t long until the president, George W. Bush, heard about what happened. It left New York City in despair. Well, after fourteen years New York City has been stronger and more together. A lot of people visit Ground Zero on September 11 to show respect for those that helped during the disaster. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the memorial service in New York, “Ten years have passed since a perfect blue sky morning turned into the blackest of nights. Since then we’ve lived in sunshine and in shadow, and although we can never unsee what happened here, we can also see that children who lost their parents have grown into young adults, grandchildren have been born and good works and public service have taken root to honor those we loved and lost.” People take photos of those lost and roses to Ground Zero. People lost like Tom Acquaviva, a man who lost his son in the World Trade Center, is 81 years old and continues to go every year. Many stories surround those affected by the crashes. Not only was New York City, New York, the only city impacted by this day, the whole country was devastated. Washington D.C. was also hurt during these hijacks. At 9:43 a.m. American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon causing the White House to evacuate. It was only twenty-seven minutes until the Pentagon collapsed. At the same time United Airlines Flight 93 was also hijacked and turned its course towards Washington, D.C.; it was believed that United Airlines Flight 93 was headed towards the White House. The passengers on board fought for control of the plane against the hijackers. When the pilot lost control, it crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania; there were no survivors. New York City, New York, and Washington, D.C. both have been through a lot in fourteen years. The United States of America got a new president, Barack Obama. The United States went to war against Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden was shot and killed, the Boston bombing, and gay marriage is now legal in every state. The security in every airport has been stricter since September 11. The United States is now stronger, together. 2015 Prom by Aysia Harper
This year at prom the juniors did a very good job at decorating the gym. The theme of this year's 2015 prom was Fire and Ice. You would probably think what the heck is that and think how would you decorate the gym. Well, the decorations turned out really nice and elegant. The decorations were just like what they said, which was fire and ice. Some decorations were red, and some were light blue and white. The basketball goals had things hanging from the rim all the way to the floor with lights underneath, which made it look like ice columns on one side and fire on the other. They split the gym; it was fire on one side and ice on the other. The tables were set up different this year; there was a long table down the middle and round tables on the side. Down the middle table is where the junior and seniors and their dates sat and the round tables is where the teachers sat. The juniors miscounted so some of the students had to sit on the side, but it was okay. For dinner they had chicken alfredo and spaghetti with a salad and bread sticks. Kristen Farnum prepared the food this year. The kids at the prom really enjoyed the punch made by Aymee and Aysia Harper. The servers this year were the sophomores: Talley White, Maggie White, Jesse Stuckey, Freddy Gonzalez, Marshall McIntire, Bryan Garcia, and Rachel Pierson. They announced King and Queen after the dinner. The King and Queen of this year's 2015 prom were Tapanga Dahle and Zachary Pierson. After they announced that, they read the seniors' wills to the students. Vance Thompson and Briannah Davidson read the wills to everyone. The dance started shortly after that at 9 o’clock. By what I could tell, everyone was having fun and enjoying himself or herself. The DJ was the same DJ that the seniors used the year before. This DJ also does the homecoming dances. He is a very good DJ and played stuff that everyone could dance to. A lot of the people danced the entire time, but, sadly, the dance had to end at 12 o’clock. The students had 45 minutes to change and be back at the school for after prom. I think that the seniors really enjoyed their last prom; well, at least, I hope. By what I saw, they all had an amazing time at prom with their dates. We will sure miss them next year at prom, but I bet next year will be just as fun. Germany by Aysia Harper
There were eleven Moscow students that went to Germany this year. The students that went this year were Alex and Paloma Moran, Aysia Harper, Briannah Davidson, Kelsi Mueller, Rachel Pierson, Amir Granillo, David Miramontes, Maggie White, Madison Owens, and Tapanga Dahle. Rachel, Amir, David, Madison, and Tapanga went to Germany on Friday, March 13. The rest of them went on Sunday, March 15. They all returned together on Monday, March 23. All of the students had a blast in Germany. The experience altogether was amazing. The way they do things there is way different than the way we do things here. The people in Germany aren’t as kind as the people here. They can be very rude until you meet them and get to know them; they can be pretty rude. One of their main highways, which is called the Autobahn, has no speed limit. The people driving do not care; they will run you over. You have to wait for the cross walk to cross the street, or there is a good chance you will be ran over. They are some crazy drivers. They all drive really fast. Their houses are different than ours as well. All of the rooms have a door on them. There are no open floor plans. There are doors on the kitchens and living rooms. There are doors everywhere. When you first get into Germany, you notice how clean everything is. There is no littering there. Plastics, paper, and waste--those are the three different trashcans and that is how you separate your trash. You seriously saw no trash anywhere. They don’t litter; they have respect for their country. The only thing you would be able to throw on the ground is like apple cores. Something that the animals can eat, nothing else. The students went to Berlin on Tuesday March 17. When they got to Berlin, they toured the city. Then they went to the Berlin zoo. Then went to eat at one of the malls there and finally back to their hotel. They stayed in Berlin for two days. While they were in Berlin, they went to the different museums they have in Berlin. Berlin was a very good learning experience. While in Rotenburg, they toured there as well and the history of it. Rotenburg is a very interesting town. After they got back from Berlin, the existing days were spent with the families except for when they went to the concentration camp and salt mine. All of the students had a great time while they were there and plan on going back in the future. Germany is a great learning experience and a very great place to visit. Donkey Basketballby Hailey White Moscow hosted a donkey basketball game March 4. We combined it with Hugoton High School. We also did donkey basketball two years ago with Hugoton as well; it was a huge hit, so they decided to do it again. This game is a fundraiser for Moscow StuCo; it helps a lot for homecoming decorations and things. We had a ton of people come to Moscow to watch the game; we even had people from Satanta come and watch. The Moscow New Gym was almost completely full. Everyone laughed almost the whole time the games were going on. They had lazy donkeys that wouldn’t do much, donkeys that would buck and do anything to get you off them, or the donkeys that were fine with you being on them. Hugoton had 2 teams that night, a red team and a blue team. Moscow also had 2 teams; one of them was called the Aces and the others are the Badonkadonks. The first game started at 7, the two Hugoton teams played each other. The blue team from Hugoton beat the red. So the blue team was going to play the winners of the two Moscow teams. After the Hugoton game, they gave rides to the little kids on the donkeys. The little kids enjoyed it a lot and many went home trying to convince their parents to get them a donkey. The next game was Moscow Aces versus the Moscow Badonkadonks. The Badonkadonks won by 2 points. The game was very interesting, and it had a lot of fouling. The guy who brought the donkeys was also the ref; he made up rules and helped the losing team if he felt like it. The guy was very nice and made the game a lot of fun. The last game of the night was the championship game between the Badonkadonks and the Hugoton Blue. The game wasn’t very entertaining. The guy in charge brought out the bucking donkey. Brock Brazeal rode it; it was so funny to watch. We all knew that he was going to be sore the next day. At the end of the game, it was tied Moscow 4 and Hugoton 4. So the guy decides that one person from each team will arm wrestle to determine the winner. David Miramontes from Moscow and Panda Rodriguez from Hugoton were chosen to wrestle. Hugoton Blue ended up winning donkey ball. It was a little disappointing to Moscow, but we had a ton of fun that night. Basketball Homecoming by Hailey White
This past week was homecoming week. It was a very eventful week at Moscow High School. This past week’s Spirit Week was a theme leading up to the pep rally. Monday we had no school. Tuesday was Throw Back Tuesday where you will dress up as your favorite Disney character. That night we had a basketball game against Satanta. It was a good game; the girls won, and the boys lost. That night we had the Little Cats Cheer Clinic where at the half time of the boys game, the grade school kids performed a dance and did a cheer that they learned at camp. It was very entertaining and the little girls enjoyed it. Wednesday was Pajama Day and, of course, everyone dressed up in his or her pajamas. Thursday was Decade Day; you come to school in your favorite decade. The basketball teams went to Rolla that night. The girls' game went into overtime, and it was very close, but the girls came out with the win. The boys also won that night. Finally, Friday is always Black and Gold Day. The pep rally was a blast. The cheerleaders had games that almost everyone was able to participate in. One of the games involved high school grades going against each other in a race of who could crawl themselves to the half court line using plungers. This game was very interesting to watch and everyone was laughing. The senior class won the game. The next game involved the homecoming candidates; this game was boys against girls. They had to tie a Kleenex box around their waist, once tied around their waist, they had to shake the ping-pong balls out of the box. Whoever got them out faster won. Ivan Enns ended up winning the game. In between the games the cheerleaders performed a dance to decade songs. The dance was very different than anything they have ever done. It was fun and very entertaining. After the dance the grade school had turn to play a game. They played Wildcat Says. We all learned that the grade school listens very well. The game lasted longer than the cheerleaders expected, but we ended up finally getting a winner. The end of the pep rally we had one more game for the candidates. The candidates and their partners got to answer decade questions. Alex and Ivan won that game by so many points. That night the basketball team played Walsh. The boys and girls ended up that night beating Walsh. After the boys game, it was the homecoming corination. Brock Brazeal and Maria Cecenas won. Bus Drivers
by Hailey White
Our bus drivers do a lot for us; they are never recognized for what they do. Everyone knows that the bus drivers take us to all of our ball games that are very far, they pick us up in the mornings for school and drop us of that afternoon. But they do so much more than that also, they make sure someone is home when they drop us off, they make sure we are seated and arriving to our destination safely. I interviewed two bus drivers from our school and asked them some questions about bus driving. Susan Roland is a bus driver at Moscow. She also drives the preschool kids in the suburban. Susan has been driving bus for 25 years now at Moscow. She started driving bus because it was a lot easier than daycare, and she could take her kids with her on the bus. To her, the best part of driving bus is the kids and what they say. She loves kids, and she thinks that they are very funny and entertaining. When I asked her what her favorite memory from all 25 years was, she just laughed. She said she has so many memories she doesn’t know where to start. But she told me that the most recent memory is when she was taking the preschool kids home and a little boy in the back seat said, “Good morning, Welcome to Hobby Lobby.” She said that she laughed so hard because it was so random and very cute. The second lady I interviewed is Sabrina Guerrero; she is new here at Moscow. She has been here for about three weeks, but she has been driving bus for 12 years. She started driving bus because they needed the money and the insurance. But she also drove bus because she also could take her daughter with her. The best part of being a bus driver for her is the kids. She loves the kids, especially the little kids because you never know what they are going to say, and they are very funny. Sabrina’s favorite memory is a recent one as well. She was dropping this girl off, and it was her last stop, and this little girl’s mom wasn't home. So the little girl started crying and was very upset, Sabina stayed with her and comforted her until someone came home. Bus drivers do so much for us, from making sure we have all of our clothes on right to making sure we arrive safely to our destination. I rode on the bus growing up and bus drivers get to know you very well, and they like to talk. So next time you are on the bus, make sure you thank your bus driver because they do so much for you. All School Play by Hailey White
This year Moscow High School put on a play called Virgil Won the Lottery. There were a lot of people this year that participated in the school play. We had 16 participate. Brice Valdez was Virgil; Hailey White was Margaret who is Virgil’s wife. Then you had Maggie White, who was Bertha Mae; she was Virgil’s sister and Margaret’s best friend. Vance Thompson was Ellard, who was Virgil’s best friend and Bertha Mae’s fiancé. We even had parents in the play; Virgil’s parents were Zachary Pierson and Tapanga Dahle, they were the Sludges. Margaret’s parents were Alex Pierson and Madison Owens; they were the Hoopers. We also had other people who did major things in the play, like Sammir who was Herman the sign painter, Kelsi Mueller who was Grandma, Talley White who was Burma Thang and Freda Fountain, Freddy Gonzalez who was the DJ and John, Rachel Pierson who was Sue Ann and Patsy, Brittney Stuckey who was Mona Graves, Aysia Harper who was Delphie Rhodes, and, last but not least, Yari who was a old lady and Isabelle the maid. The play cast started practice in September, so they have put in a lot of their time into it. The play took place November 21, 2014 in the high school gymnasium. The play started at 7:15 but the senior class prepared a dinner and that was at 6:30. The dinner was oven-baked chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread and a desert. The play cast even got out of school early that day to perform it in front of the school. So the play cast got all of the nerves and the stress out during the day, so they would be fine that night. The play was about a guy (Virgil) who has bought lottery tickets behind his wife’s back, and the day she finds out is the day he wins the lottery. She was very upset, but in the end was very happy because the house they lived in wasn’t the best place to start a family. As they get the check and meet people, they are slowly losing their family and friends and they are not treating them the way they should be. At the end of the play, Virgil and his wife Margret learn that no matter how much money they have won it won’t matter because they like their life and family and they don’t want to lose that. I personally loved this play; it was not just a serious play; it was funny, too. You had to listen to what people were saying in the play because you might have missed a funny little joke or something. Mrs. Knoll did an amazing job finding this play and putting it together well, even the stage decorations were amazing this year. Senior Night by Alexis Manriquez
Senior Night was held before the high school football game on Friday, October 24, 2014, against Fowler. The senior football players were introduced with their parents. Each mom of the players got a flower. There were seven Seniors, and they were Brice Valdez, Brock Brazeal, Tad Stuckey, Alexis Manriquez, Zachary Pierson, Ivan Enns, and Zac Slemp. The parents include the following: Marcie Knoll and Tom Valdez are the parents of Brice Valdez, Kristy and Billy Brazeal are the parents of Brock Brazeal, Shelly Stuckey and Jeremy Stuckey are the parents of Tad Stuckey, Alejandra and Francisco Manriquez are the parents of Alexis Manriquez, Hope and Terry Pierson are the parents of Zachary Pierson, Sara and Isack Enns are parents of Ivan Enns, and Misty and Kevin Slemp are the parents of Zac Slemp. Brice participates in cross country, football, basketball, StuCo, the school play, Scholars’ Bowl, and track and field. Brock participates in football, basketball and baseball. Tad Stuckey participates in football, basketball, and baseball. Alexis participate in football, basketball, baseball and track. Zachary participates in football, Scholars’ Bowl, basketball and track. Ivan participates in football, basketball and baseball. Zac participates in football, baseball and track. It was the last home football game for the seniors. It was very memorable, and each senior got some very special playing time while beating Fowler 68 to 18. It was a very special win for the seniors. The German Exchange Students Are Hereby Talley White Have you ever gotten to host a German exchange student? Well, if you haven’t you’re missing out on all of the fun! The German Exchange students arrived October 1. They stayed here until the fifteenth. I have gotten to talk to some of the Germans that are here, and they are super excited to be here. They say that it is very different from Germany. They love the school and all of the kids. They are always laughing and smiling when you see them in the hallways. The German exchange students have the privilege of putting on a little show for us. We call it “German Night.” They do many different things through the night. Three years ago they did some sort of a little play and had people from the audience do different things in the play. It was very funny. They also had a German boy who could play the piano. He was amazing! He played five songs for us, and they were so good. Two years ago they had a karate demonstration where they would show us their skills and then try to teach us how they did it. They also had a soccer game because in Germany soccer is very big. The game was you had to kick the ball in boxes that were spread across the stage. No one could do it except for one of the German boys. One of the girls also sang a couple of songs. She was very good! Last year they played the cup song off Pitch Perfect, and they did awesome. They also put a slideshow together of their journey to Moscow, Kansas. In the slideshow they had many pictures of the exchange students doing different things and activities. We are very excited to see what they will be doing this year! The German exchange students fly from Germany to Denver. They stay in Denver for a couple of days and go sightseeing, and they go do activities. After they’re done in Denver, the Moscow bus goes and picks up the students and brings them back to Moscow, Kansas. When they arrive, their hosts are waiting to pick them up. They then go home with their host and go meet the families. This year we have twelve German exchange students here. Over spring break some of the students of Moscow will have the opportunity to go to Germany and stay with their host. They are very excited to be able to go to Germany. They are counting down the days until they leave! Homecoming by Hailey White
This week is Homecoming for the Moscow Wildcats! We have many things scheduled this week to show how much school spirit we have. To make this week fun, the cheerleaders have some fun ideas for Spirit Week. On Monday wear your favorite hat or dress up wearing your favorite team; on Tuesday it’s Pajama Day, which everyone absolutely loves Pajama Day. Wednesday is Twin Day or Triplet Day, so you dress up matching someone. On Thursday, it’s “ Would you still be my best friend if I wore this? Day”, which means wear your craziest outfit you own and just look silly. Last but not least, Friday, which is Black and Gold Day like always, so come all decked out in our school colors. Homecoming week is always a crazy week; on Monday the high school girls go to Guymon for a volleyball game. Thursday after all of the practices, for fun there is going to be a bonfire to kick of our big game Friday night against Ingalls; the bonfire will take place at Chuck Pearson’s. In the afternoon during school on Friday, we are having a parade down Main Street and then a pep rally in the city park, so if you have nothing to do Friday afternoon, come and have fun and show your school spirit. Friday night before the game you will be able to watch and see who wins this year’s homecoming Queen and King. Our girl candidates this year are Paloma Moran, Alex Moran, Maria Cecenas, Tapanga Dahle, and Kaitlyn Dobie. For the boys, it’s Brice Valdez, Alexis Manriquez, Ivan Enns, Tad Stuckey and Brock Brazeal. The neat thing about this year’s candidates is that they are all seniors. No one remembers the last time that all seniors were candidates for homecoming, you can go back so many years and still not all the candidates were seniors, so it is definitetly very interesting that this year all of the candidates are seniors. The girl candidates will be riding in Jeeps that night around the track and the song for homecoming is “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice. After the game Friday night, the high school students will be going bowling for homecoming. The school takes us on buses to Sublette to their bowling alley. By the time we get home that night it’s around midnight. The next morning Moscow has a high school volleyball tournament going on that will last most of the day. As you can tell this upcoming week is going to be a very busy one, so get plenty of rest and show your school spirit! Pep Rally!
by Hailey White, senior
September 12, 2014, the high school had their first pep rally of the year! The cheerleaders were very anxious for their first pep rally of the year. This year’s cheerleaders want all of the pep rallies, that we have to be fun and enjoyable for everyone that attends, because here in Moscow no one really likes them because they are not that fun. At the pep rally the girls started in with a chant; after awhile people started to stand up and clap and say the words, which that was very exciting that people actually stood up. After that the girls had the football team, volleyball team, and cross country team come up as a team and talk about their season and who they are playing. Then they had a very funny game planned. They had 1 boy and 1 girl from each grade come down. Then they had chairs set up at one side of the gym for the boys to sit in. The girls were on the other side of the gym; they had 3 balloons that they have to pop with the boys. So they had to run down and sit on the boys the first time, the second time the boys were standing, and the third time the boys had to lay on the ground. The game was very funny and entertaining to watch; the crowd loved it. The winners of the were the junior class. After that game the cheerleaders performed a dance that they learned at the UCA camp. The song they danced to was “Pump it” by the Black Eyed Peas. The dance was very neat, and at the end they did some stunting. During the pep rally the band also played some songs, but the last thing they did at the pep rally was a freeze game for the high school volleyball, football and cross country team. The point of this game is that when the music is playing you dance, and when it stops so do you. If you don’t stop, you are out. This game took forever. The school sure knows how to stop right when the music does. When the high school finally got done with the game, the junior high had a turn at it. That was our very first pep rally of the year. The cheerleaders are still trying to make the next ones way better than that one. Their goal is to make sure everyone has fun and enjoys going to the pep rally. I think they did a good job on including a lot of people. Let’s just hope the next ones get better. Back to School

jh Scholars' bowlby Morgan Robson & Jodi Staggers
Moscow hosted a home meet on Feb. 28, 2018 with a Round Robin Tournament. The teams that attended were Moscow Black, Gold and Gray, Satanta Green and Gold, Rolla Green and White, Deerfield White and Red and Ulysses Orange and Black. Moscow Black consisted of eighth grader Jane Beckham, 7th graders Angel Hignett and Lizzy Ketchum, and 6th grader Conder DeVaughan. They won three of their nine rounds with points totaling 390. Moscow Gray consisted of all sixth grade girls: Kate Gonzalez, Jacie James, Katy Olivas, and Megan Whetstone. These girls competed for their first exposure to a scholars bowl meet as well as competing against a lot of experienced teams. Moscow Gold was made up of all eighth graders: Elizabeth Erivies, Ashley Kennedy, Hunter Persinger, Cambria Phillips and Audric Roland. This team did very well and placed third. This is the first time since Mrs. Staggers has been a coach that a Moscow team has placed at the home meet. Moscow Gold had a cumulative point total of 500 points for all ten rounds. On March 1, Moscow Jr. High Scholars Bowl traveled to Satanta for a meet. This meet consisted of two pools for the varsity pools and two in the junior varsity. The varsity team consisted of eighth graders: Jane Beckham, Elizabeth Erives, Ashley Kennedy, Hunter Persinger, Cambria Phillips and Audric Roland. They were up against Minneola, Hodgeman County, Satanta, Spearville, South Central, and Fowler; the scores were 60-40, 85-(-5), 80-20, 105-20, 60-20, and 30-60 (opponent listed first then Moscow in scores). Sixth graders Conder DeVaughan, Katy Olivas, and Megan Whetstone, and 7th graders Lizzy Ketchum and Angel Hignett and 8th grader Jane Beckham made up the junior varsity. They competed against Spearville, Fowler, Ashland, Minneola, Hodgeman County, and Satanta. Those scores were 60-20, 10-0, 20-30, 60-30, 30-20, and 40-15 (opponent listed first then Moscow in scores). Scholars Bowl at Rolla was divided into four total pools with the best of each pool moving out of pool play. The Moscow Varsity team consisted of all 8th graders: Jane Beckham, Elizabeth Erives, Ashley Kennedy, Cambria Phillips, Hunter Persinger, and Audric Roland. Their competitors were Dodge City Middle School, Comanche (Dodge City), Deerfield and Satanta. The scores were 50-70, 25-40, 40-20, and 40-80 (Moscow listed first). Our junior varsity team was in a completely different pool. This team consisted of sixth graders Conder DeVauhgn, Jacie James, Aiden Miramontes and Megan Whetstone and seventh graders Angel Higgnet and Lizzy Ketchum. Their pool play consisted of Dodge City 2, Deerfield 2, Satanta 2 and Semour Rogers 2. Their scores were (Moscow-then opponent): 40-70, 35-20, 30-20, and 5-70. The students improved drastically during practice and the season in general. Mrs. Staggers enjoyed having some of them back for a second or third season. “I enjoyed watching some of the students come out of their shells as they competed and had fun. We all learned a lot this year and I look forward to next year.” said Mrs. Staggers. Busy Week At MHSby Morgan Robson
It has been a busy week around MHS with Sub-state being at Fowler. The boys will play Thursday against Rolla or Bucklin. The Girls got a bye and will play Friday against Rolla. The girls have played Rolla twice, Rolla won at Rolla and Moscow won at Moscow. It is going to be a good game against the two teams. The girls lost to Sublette last Tuesday for the last regular season game of the year. The girls go into sub-state with the number two seed. In Kansas Sub-State they have to win to advance. Sub-State Championship is on Saturday at 6 p.m. and the boys game to follow. The last time the girls made a state tournament run was in 2015, this year’s senior girls’ freshman year. The 2015 team placed second in the state tournament with two of this years’ girls playing on the team. Good luck this week, Wildcats! Big Baller Brand Goes Internationalby Morgan Robson
LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball have led their basketball team in Lithuanian to a victory. LaVar and Tina, mom and dad of the boys, were in attendance at the game. LiAngelo had 19 points and three rebounds and LaMelo had 10 points, six turnovers, and nine assists. The game yesterday was sponsored by BBB ( Big Baller Brand). There were players on the other team, Zalgiris that were younger than LaMelo. The crowd was amazed by the talent from the boys. People were loud and cheering all game long. In Lithuanian they put first names on the back of the jerseys instead of last names. This game was a part of the BBB challenge games. Meanwhile the younger two boys are playing basketball in Lithuania, BBB is getting sued for not paying for their merchandise. The company that does all the screen printing and embroidering has not been paid. BBB owes them almost $25,000 and a lawsuit has been filed against them. The Closet Collection is the company who has filed the lawsuit. The CC has provided approximately 2,500 pieces of clothing and accessories. There have been several complaints about BBB. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a company who rates several big business; the Big Baller Brand received an F rating from them. Better Business has tried to reach out to Big Baller Brand two times and have not received anything back. News writers have tried to get a hold of them as well and no word back thus far. Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Dodger World Series 2017by Javier Marquez
This year’s World Series has been one of the craziest in MLB history. Records have been broken, games have been short and long, but also very exciting. Both teams are great ball clubs. During the regular season, both teams won over 100 games. The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the National League pennant for the first time in 29 years by defeating the defending champions, Chicago Cubs, in the NLCS in five games. The Houston Astros clinched the American League pennant for the first time in franchise history by defeating the New York Yankees in seven games. The last time the Houston Astros won a pennant and were in the World Series was in 2005. In 2005, the Houston Astros were part of the National League and not the American League. Game One: The day was October 24, 2017, and both teams were ready to start off the 2017 World Series. The game was played in Los Angeles, California in Dodger Stadium. It was Clayton Kershaw on the mound for the Dodgers against Dallas Keuchel of the Houston Astros. When the game started, the Los Angeles Dodgers didn’t waste any time getting on the board. The first pitch the Los Angeles Dodgers saw, center fielder Chris Taylor hit a solo home run to take the lead in game one. During the top of the fourth inning, third baseman, Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros tied the game by hitting a solo homerun to left field. During the bottom of the sixth inning, Dodgers’ third baseman, Justin Turner hit a two-run homerun to left center to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead against the Astros and that was just enough to give the Dodgers a win during game one. Clayton Kershaw pitched seven inning allowing three hits, one run, no walks, and striking out 11 batters. Game Two: October 25, 2017, in Los Angeles. The Dodgers had a 1-0 lead in the World Series after defeating the Astros 3-1 the night before in game one. Houston Astros had Justin Verlander on the mound going against Rich Hill of the Los Angeles Dodgers. On the top of the third inning the Astros got on the board with a single from Alex Bregman who brought in Josh Reddick. The Dodgers answered back on the top of the fifth inning by hitting a solo home run from Joc Pederson. The next inning, Corey Seager hit a two-run homerun putting the Dodgers up 3-1. The Houston Astros weren’t giving up. On the top of the eighth inning, Carlos Correa singled bringing in Alex Bregman and getting a solo home run from Marwin Gonzalez. The Astros had tied the game and sent it to extra innings. In the tenth inning, the Astros hit back-to-back home runs from Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa. The Dodgers were now down 5-3, but Yasiel Puig had different plans; he hit a solo homerun to left field and gave the Dodgers hope, and it did. Kike Hernandez hit a single to bring in Logan Forsythe to tie the game at 5. In the 11th inning, George Springer hit a two-run homerun to give the Houston Astros a 7-5 lead. The Dodgers ended getting one run from Charlie Culberson hitting a solo home run, but that wasn’t enough, the Astros had tied the series at 1-1. U.S. Strikes Syrian Airbaseby Morgan Lahey
The Syrian government has attacked its own citizens recently. They attacked them with chemical weapons. Donald Trump thought they had finally crossed a “red line”. The U.S. military has launched 59 cruise missiles. They sent them to a Syrian airfield. It hit the airfield at 4:40 a.m. this past Friday. The U.S. tried not to hurt the Russians with the missiles. Russia supports Syria and their government even though the United States does not support their government. There has been a civil war going on between the Syrian government, many rebels, and the Islamic State. This civil war has been going on for six years now. Russia has been on the Syrian government's side this whole time. Russia has been supporting the government. The United States has been supporting and helping the rebels that are against the Syrian government. This is the first attack that President Donald Trump has ordered since being in office. The United States even told Russia that they were going to send missiles. Around 450,000 people have been killed during the civil war. Many, many people have left the country to other countries, so they won’t get caught in the violence. The United States had gotten proof that Syria had attacked the citizens and killed 86 people. The chemical weapons that the Syrian government used were made to cause the most pain possible. Trump has attacked so that he can show the Syrian president that he can not use those kind of chemical weapons. The United States was not very happy with Russia. The United States and Russia had signed an agreement a few years ago that said Russia would help get rid of Syria’s chemical weapons. Russia did not follow through with doing this. Many people have been killed including babies and young children. Since Syria used chemical weapons it was a very slow, painful, and terrible death. President Trump launched the missiles without even getting it passed by the Congress. The Republicans backed Trump, but the Democrats did not like the idea very much. The airfield that they launched the missiles to was targeted because that is where they stored chemical weapons. There were also aircrafts that were stored there that had carried many chemical weapons. The United States has destroyed many aircrafts that belonged to the Syrian government. They are either destroyed completely or severely damaged. “As long as America stands for justice, then peace and harmony will in the end prevail,” Trump said. President of the United States of America, Donald Trump won the Presidential Election against Hillary Clinton on November 11, 2016. He went to office on January 20, 2017. President Trump announced his run for President on June 16, 2015 at his own Trump Tower in New York City. President Trump became known for his plans of changing Obamacare, Immigration, and other things. When President Trump announced his race for president, he said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” After that he said that when he wins he would make a wall down the southern border of the US to make sure the bad people can’t come to the United States and make Mexico pay for it. Mexico’s former President Vicente Fox said, “We will not pay for the ******* wall.” President Donald Trump and President Enrique Pena Nieto attended a meeting at Los Pinos presidential residence, in Mexico City, Mexico on August 31, 2016. The two were supposed to meet together on January 31, 2017, at the White House in Washington D.C. Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto cancelled the meeting via twitter. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump told CNN that he wants Republicans and Democrats to work together on an immigration reform bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to stay in the US with their families if they paid taxes and had no serious criminal record. “The time is right for an immigration bill as long as there is a compromise on both sides,” President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House. Texas Republican Rep. Bill Flores said, “I am there, that’s where I am, that’s where my district is and I’ve got a fairly conservative district so I’m fine with that.” “President Trump is in a unique position by coming out and advocating something where I think most of the country is that he can silence what I say is the hard left and the hard right on this, not silence, but he can sort of bring a perfectly reasonable solution that’s important so I’m glad he’s doing it.” Flores said. House Republican Rep. Steve Scalise said he wants to see us secure the border first and that it should be our top priority on immigration. Lava Hitting The Ocean Water
by Morgan Lahey
Lots of molten hot lava has been shooting out of a cliff on the sea on a Hawaiian Island. This hot lava has been splashing into the Pacific Ocean and exploding when it touches the cool water. The molten lava is coming out of a volcano named Kileau. The lava is coming out of a gigantic tube that comes out of the Kamokuna ocean entry. This is near the southeast end of the big island. A twenty-six acre delta collapsed into the ocean on New Year’s Eve, exposing a huge tube. Since the delta fell it caused huge explosions and big waves. The lava is shooting straight outward. It is starting to get bigger and bigger. The molten lava is now going as deep as seventy feet below the ocean. Molten lava is a rock that has gotten so hot that it has turned into a liquid. It can either come from the tops of volcanoes or from tunnels. When this lava hits the water it makes a huge explosion. When these big explosions happen, it can shoot the rocks onto land or even farther seaward. A lot of boat captains are now keeping a watch on the cliffs. They watch the cliffs to keep the passengers safe. One of the boat owners, Shane Turpin, said, “We have never had an incident.” Most of the boat captains can actually see the cliffs moving and changing during the day. Shane Turpin says that he has never ever seen anything like it in the thirty years he has been doing that kind of work. The National Park Service is in charge of the safety of people. That means they have to watch out for the visitors along the shore. They have blocked off the area so people cannot climb near the hot lava. Shane Turpin says that he sees many people up there closer than they should be. People are going under the roped off area near the lava flow. There is a huge crack called the “Hot Crack.” If it breaks off all of the rock will go into the ocean making hot lava splatter everywhere and cause huge explosions. It will explode right when it hits the cool ocean water. When the rocks fall and cause an explosion, they also create steam. The steam is super hot and laced with hydrochloric acid. There are also shards of volcanic glass in the steam. No one knows how or when it will slow down. Super Bowl LIby Javier Marquez
Super Bowl LI will be on February 5, 2017 at Houston, Texas at NRG Stadium at 5:30 PM on Fox TV. The game will be between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. Atlanta Falcons defeated the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship match to advance to the Super Bowl. New England Patriots defeated Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game to advance to the Super Bowl. Tom Brady, the quarterback for the New England Patriots, will make his seventh appearance in a Super Bowl with Coach Belichick on Sunday. He has won four out of the six times he has been in the Super Bowl. His only losses came against New York Giants, in Super Bowl XLI and Super Bowl XLVI. Coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have been one of the best coach/quarterback duo in history. For the Atlanta Falcons this is the first time since Super Bowl XXXIII which was on January 31, 1999, that they have made it to the Super Bowl. On Super Bowl XXXIII, the Falcons fell to the Denver Broncos 34-19 at Pro Player Stadium in Miami. The Atlanta Falcons are lead by nine-year starting quarterback Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan was drafted by the Falcons with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Matt Ryan was the first rookie to start for the Atlanta Falcons since Michael Vick did in 2001. Matt Ryan will make his Super Bowl debut on February 5, 2017 and try to win his first ring. New England Patriots have been to the Super Bowl nine times and have won four of them. All of the Super Bowls that the Patriots have won have been when Tom Brady was the starting quarterback. The Atlanta Falcons have been to the Super Bowl two times and have failed to win at least one. Matt Ryan and the Falcons are looking to get their first ever Super Bowl win for the Atlanta Falcons. Besides the game and players, the halftime show is what a lot of people are interested in. This year Lady Gaga will perform at Houston for the halftime show. Lady Gaga has invited Tony Bennett. Tony Bennett is an American singer of traditional pop standards, big band, show tunes, and jazz. Country star Luke Bryan will sing the National Anthem. During the Super Bowl, people love the commercials. New commercials come out during every Super Bowl. A lot of big name brands will have new commercials out--Budweiser, Snickers, Mercedes-Benz, Mountain Dew, Victoria's Secret, Intel, and Wix. High School Basketball by Jaylen Mendez
Basketball season is here, and the Wildcats are ready. The Moscow Wildcats’ Boys and Girls Basketball Teams recently started basketball and their first game will be December 2 against the Ingalls Bulldogs. Now that the team has started practice, the following starters that will be coming back for the boys will be Junior Jaylen Mendez, Junior Javier Marquez, Junior Jalen Shaddix, and Junior Kage Allen. For the girls, the remaining starters from last year are the following: Junior Morgan Robson and Junior Monica Gonzalez. The boys did not lose a starter from last year but Senior Jesse Stuckey tore his ACL and meniscus, so he will not be able to play this year, but he could be back around sub-state. The girls did lose a lot; they lost Kelsi Mueller, Briannah Davidson, and Madilyn Lahey. The boys had a year to know how each other plays and know what each other is capable to do, so according to their coach he is excited to see what this year is going to be! Head Coach Harp calls his team a group of brothers; he has coached them last year. Mr. Harp has a new assistant coach this year who is his dad. His dad has been coaching for quite some time and saw the boys play last year and he got the privilege to be the boys assistant coach and is excited for the season just like his son. The Lady Wildcats have lost a lot, but hopefully, the underclassmen will step up and help the juniors out. The girls got two new coaches, Mr. and Mrs. Moore. Mr. Moore is the head coach and Mrs. Moore is his assistant. The girls will have this year to get to know what each other knows and what each of them are capable of doing. A new coach and losing three of the five starters from last year will put a hole in the team but the Wildcats will not give up and fight until the final buzzer. The Wildcats will have their first home game December 6 against Rolla. Come out and support the Wildcats as they start the beginning of the season. Field of Screamsby Jaylen Mendez
With Halloween this month, the haunted houses are getting out of control. In Maize, Kansas, at the Fields of Screams, a customer committed suicide by shooting himself. A man turned a gun to himself after an argument with a woman at the Field of Screams haunted attraction in Northwest Wichita Friday night. This incident did not have anything to do with the employees or anything to do with the Field of Screams. Jody and Kip Scott have put on the Field of Screams for thirteen years now. The Scotts have never had an incident happen at the Fields of Screams; they claim it has always been a safe event to come to. The Scotts have security cameras, surveillance cameras, and have a lot of signs up that say no weapons and no concealed weapons. Scott says they normally have six to 10 off-duty officers and security to control the crowd. After this incident, they decided to make some changes. Scott says they added more officers Saturday night. They also put up a station at the entrance, where people would go through a metal detector before coming inside, but as of right now, they only have wands. The Scotts are worried that people will think it is not safe now, but they want people to know that the Field of Screams has and will continue to be a safe event to attend. The Field of Screams evacuated on Saturday night right after the incident happen. The owners were upset that they had to evacuate and close the Fields of Screams, but they opened back up less than 24 hours after this incident happen. This incident happened approximately around 10:15 p.m. And no one else was injured. The Scotts feel bad for the family of the guy who committed suicide, but they hope the family is doing good and hope people still come out and have fun at the Field of Screams. by Hailey White

Also during our time at the library, we had musical entertainment, a group of Hugoton girl sang a beautiful song; then Hailey White from Moscow sang. After the entertainment, they had set up a photo booth with props for us to take pictures with. It was a wonderful event, and we all had fun. The Moscow High School basketball girls are going to state! They are the #1 seed in class 1A Division 2. Their tournament is held at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City, KS. Their first game is Wednesday, March 11 against the #8 seed Sylvan- Lucas Mustangs. The Lady Cats played the Pawnee Heights Tigers to advance to the Sub-state Championship where they played the Rolla Pirates. They were really nervous the entire game until the last few minutes of the game. They came out with the win of 54-39. The girls played a good game. The Lady Wildcats had a lot of support at the game. The whole town of Moscow was there to support them! They are very thankful for everything our community has done for them. The girls have been getting fed well this last week. The moms put together a spaghetti dinner for the girls after they got out of practice. The moms gave speeches to the girls, and they did an awesome job. The girls also got to go out to Pizza Hut with their whole team and eat together. They had a great time being together as a team. They had many laughs and enjoyed being there. The moms put on another dinner the next day for the girls. The moms made some yummy lasagna, green beans, bread, and salad. The girls are very thankful for everyone who has been cheering them on. The girls said that it is amazing to be part of this wonderful community. The community had a send off parade Wednesday the 11 for the girls. The girls got to walk down Main Street and give everyone hugs and tell them thank you. When the girls got to Dodge, they were very nervous at first. They weren’t making any shots and played timid. The second half of the game, the girls picked it up; they played well. They beat the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs with the score of 56-42. The girls will now play Wheatland-Grinnell on Friday the 13 at 6:00. The girls are ready to play again. After the game the team went out and ate at Applebees together. They all were very excited that they just won and wanted to celebrate. The town of Moscow was very generous and gave the team $500 to eat out. The girls were very thankful that they did that. The girls enjoyed eating together, and they can’t wait to play Friday! The girls would love for everyone to come to Dodge and support our girls as they play the Wheatland-Grinnell Thunderhawks the 13. Hypnotist by Hailey White
On Saturday January 17 in Moscow High School Old Gym, we had a hypnotist come to our school. The Moscow Recreation brought the guy in; it was free will donation of canned food to get in. Many people from the town did show up. We had lots of volunteers who wanted to be hypnotized. Many people say you can’t be hypnotized; that it's all fake, and people just act. Well, I thought they same thing until Saturday night where I volunteered to see if this was really a joke or not. The guy had a few rules, though the major one was to be 15 or older and the rest of them were common sense rules. Not everyone can be hypnotized though there is no reason really why but you just can't. But I was one who volunteered to be hypnotized as well as 15 others. One person was not able to be hypnotized and another person fell out of hypnosis. For me it was a very weird experience. I knew what I was doing, but yet I couldn’t help my actions. I don’t remember everything that he had us do, but I do remember saying to myself I am not going to do this, but yet I did. The hypnotist had us do many things, like we were fish in a fish bowl and we had to act like we were swimming, or we were in the movie theaters and we watched a sad movie, a scary movie, an inappropriate movie and a very funny movie. My favorite thing that he had us do, that I have watched a video over is when we were driving a very nice car, a convertible, and we hit a dog. Some of the people looked sad, some it didn’t faze, but for me and another girl we were bawling. It was a sight to see, I guess. If you have never seen a hypnotist, you need to go to a show. Don’t volunteer the first time you go, you want to watch first to know what to expect. But if you get the chance to volunteer, do it. It’s an experience I know I will never forget, and I know the rest of the volunteers won't forget either. So hypnotists really are real, and it’s not just a joke with actors, and if you don’t believe me, go do it. Maybe you will be one of the people who can be hypnotized. Christmas Break by Ashli Huss
Christmas break is the break everyone wants to go to. Especially, kids, that are in school, can’t wait for Christmas break. Even parents can’t wait for Christmas break. Parents can’t wait because they get to get off work and get to see other family members. Christmas break is the break that everyone has to wait until the middle of school. Even though it is in the middle of the school year, it is the break that every kid in school can’t wait for. Younger kids can’t wait because they get new toys from Santa or from their families. Parents like and dislike Christmas break. They like Christmas break because they get off work. Also, they get to see family members that they haven’t seen in a while when they gather together. The reason why they dislike Christmas break is because they have to spend money on their kids, nieces, nephews, and other family members for presents, decorations, and a Christmas tree. Getting presents for everyone can be difficult. It can be difficult if you have a limit on your money, and on how many people you have to shop for. If you have a limited amount of money, you can make some homemade presents for people. Most people are thankful for having the most expensive presents, and other people are thankful for having the time to spend it with their families. Overall, Christmas break is supposed to be a time where you cool down and spend time with your family. You can relax by a warm fire and drink hot chocolate. If you don’t like hot chocolate, you can have some other warm drink to warm up with. You can grab a cozy blanket, a pillow, and someone to cuddle up with, just to keep warm if you want. Christmas break is where you can hang out with friends, a boyfriend, a girlfriend, family, etc., just basically anyone who you want to hang out with. During the break, you can make a snowman, snow angels, have a snowball fight, and just goof around with people. This is supposed to be a fun break and to have fun while having it. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t have fun while on Christmas break because a reason why we have it is to have fun. You can be like Anna and Elsa in Frozen and go ice-skating. Just have fun and enjoy the snow! Thanksgiving Lunch by Alexis Manriquez
On Friday, November 13, the school lunch cooks served Thanksgiving lunch for the students and staff of Moscow. Students and teachers and staff’s spouses showed up to eat. They served turkey with mashed potatoes and a roll, and they had sweet potatoes, strawberry salad, stuffing. For desert they got pumpkin pie or pecan pie. Everyone was excited for pumpkin pie and stuffing. A lot of people showed up to eat and everyone had a good time. I asked some of the people a few questions and asked them what did they think. Hailey said the food was good. Hailey did eat a lot and overall she liked the lunch. I also asked Sammir how he liked the Thanksgiving lunch. He also liked it, and his favorite thing was the sweet potatoes. Then I asked Aysia how she liked it, and she said a lot; her favorite thing was everything, and she said that it tasted good. She can’t wait for next Thanksgiving lunch here at the school. Maria said she loved everyting especially the strawberry salad. She said it tasted good. David said, “The stuffing was on point.’ Mrs.Knoll said, “The students ran to the lunch room like they hadn’t eaten for months.” Jostens Workshop By Talley White
Last Tuesday the yearbook staff had the opportunity of going to Liberal for the Jostens Workshop. We learned many new and different things that we can do for our yearbook. We learned about what popular fonts and layouts people have used. The yearbook staff includes Sammir Martinez, Aysia Harper, Hailey White, Maria Cecenas, Alexis Manriquez, Ashli Huss, and Talley White. Our yearbook teacher is Mrs. Knoll. We also got to talk to one of the Jostens yearbook guys. His name was John Cutsinger. He was amazing. He presented different Powerpoints over his favorite yearbooks from 2014 and shared his thoughts with us. He also told us some very funny stories about himself and his kids. He was a very nice and funny guy. John Cutsinger is the creative account manager for Jostens. He has been involved in journalism over the past 38 years. He has been teaching/speaking at conferences and conventions across the nation and sharing his ideas and thoughts with thousands of students. John Cutsinger says, “ Students are capturing stories that will last a lifetime.” He also said, “ Yearbooks are alive and well, and they’re important. With the immediacy of social media, people think the printed word is dying, but it’s not. You can’t pick up a Twitter account and hold it to your chest like you can a yearbook. “ Our representative for our yearbook is Jake Wright. Jake Wright has been working with Jostens since 2004. Jake says that he has been involved with yearbooks and photography his whole life, so he enjoys being able to do this for students. When Jake isn’t working he loves to run. He is passionate about his health, fitness, and nutrition. He also loves to travel with his wife, Krystal. I think the best part of the workshop was getting donuts, because who doesn’t like donuts? They were so good! But I also enjoyed learning more things that we can do to make our yearbook look awesome. We are all very excited to show you what he taught us this year. We all had a great time at the yearbook workshop. We learned many new and exciting things that we can do. We got to talk about what we want our yearbook theme to be and colors and layouts and much more. We are very excited to start putting the yearbook together for you guys. The yearbook staff of Moscow High School is ready to show off our skills and show you guys what we learned at the workshop! Hobbiesby Ashli Huss A person’s hobby is something that he or she enjoy doing. There are many different kinds of hobbies out there… Some hobbies include the following: horseback riding, bird watching, playing sports, origami folding, coin collecting, etc. If someone has a hobby it is because they enjoy doing it, not because someone else said that they have to do it. If someone is doing some thing because someone else told them to, it is not a hobby. Someone should do what he or she enjoys not because some cool kid in school said that they would fit in if they did that certain thing. There can even be a club for people who enjoy the same things. There could be a bird watching club for people who enjoy watching different types of birds in the sky or on the ground. There can be a club for people who enjoy collecting different kinds or different countries’ coins. Following this there can be someone who has the following countries’ coins: United States, Italy, Japan, France, Greece, Mexico, etc. If someone’s hobby is playing a certain game, then you can tell that they play it a lot because it is their hobby. For example, there are a lot of people who play Clash of Clans because they like it or enjoy playing it with their friends. People shouldn’t be judged on what their hobby is. They should be judged on what their personality is, but we’re not talking about personality. Everyone has a hobby, and they can all be different. Hobbies are what someone enjoys doing, not what other people think about their hobby. Hobbies are what people enjoy doing. It can be anything from writing a novel to practicing yoga. Hobbies come in many different forms and should all be taken seriously. Nobody should be making fun of someone because of their hobby. |

The students of Moscow High School are back at school and ready for a great year! There are some different changes this school year. We start the day earlier and get out earlier. We also have many new teachers this year.
The new junior high math teacher is Mrs. Staggers. She is also teaching Computers II this year. Mrs. Staggers is from Greely, Colorado. She has lived in parts of Kansas and Oklahoma as well. She grew up in Haviland, KS. She went to college for a year at Dodge City Community College. She also went to Pratt Community College as well. She finished her degree online at Graud Canyon University. Mrs. Staggers has always wanted to be a teacher since she can remember. When asked, she said that she enjoys teaching here at Moscow and enjoys being in the small town that Moscow is.
We also got a new para here at Moscow. Chelsi Valdez said that she hasn’t always wanted to teach, but she sure does enjoy it. She went to college at Seward Community College and Kansas State University. She came back to Moscow to be closer to her son and her family. Before coming to Moscow, Chelsi was a para at Hugoton Elementary. Chelsi said that she enjoys living in Moscow.
Our new science teacher is Miss Harvey. Miss Harvey lived in Mt. Vernon, Ohio before she came to Moscow. She went to college at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. She came to Moscow because she wanted to live closer to friends, and it was a great opportunity. She spent a year as a sub, before she started teaching here. Miss Harvey hasn’t always wanted to teach. Throughout high school and most of college, she wanted to go to vet school. During college she became a teacher’s aid and discovered that she really enjoyed being in front of a class. Miss Harvey likes being at Moscow because everyone has been friendly and welcoming to her.
The new history teacher is Mr. McKinney. He is also the high school assistant football coach. Mr. McKinney hasn’t always wanted to be a teacher. When he was younger, he wanted to be a firefighter. When he was a little bit older, he wanted to be a rock star. After those things didn’t work out, he decided to go to college to become a teacher. He went to college at Fort Hays State University, Austin Community College and Neosho. Before moving to Moscow, he lived in Hays. Mr. McKinney decided to coach because he was very interested in it. He had some great coaches that made a good impact on him, and he wanted to do that for other kids. Before coming to Moscow to teach, he subbed in Hays for about a year. He did his student teaching in Garden. Mr. McKinney was born and raised in a small town, so when he got the job offer; he was very excited to be able to have the great opportunity of teaching. So far he enjoys being in Moscow. He says that we have some great people around here who have helped him out and have been super friendly.

Lockers
by Madison Owens
Okay, so nearing the end of school and we all are required to clean out our own lockers. Some people keep their lockers spotless, but some people make an absolute disaster of their lockers.
After lunch today I questioned a few people about the status of their lockers. Two of them were seniors; they said that they are overjoyed about cleaning out their lockers because it meant that they were actually done with school. Morganne Owens uses locker boards and keeps all of her books in order and also keeps folders to help with organizing her papers. She says that she doesn’t have a hard time at all with keeping her locker clean.
Marki Anton was another senior that I talked to and she says that over the years her locker has gotten cleaner and cleaner. Her freshman year she had the most classes, so she had the most papers and books. Her sophomore year she had less, so less papers and books and the same for her junior and senior years. Marki also told me that she used to have to bring three or four bags to get all of her stuff home. This year, she is only using one small bag. She also told me that one way she keeps her locker clean is to clean it a couple of times throughout the year.
I also talked to Yari Maldonado, a sophomore this year. While I stood there, she told me that when she gets all of her stuff home, it takes her about two trash bags to put it all in. She thinks that if she would use more of the organizer racks, then she would be able to keep her locker cleaner.
Over my years in school, though, I have noticed that there are a lot of people that keep really clean lockers, and there are a lot of people that don’t keep anywhere close to a clean locker. Vance Thompson, being one of the messy people, has a couple of racks. He does use his racks, but he also just throws papers in the bottom along with his bag and jackets. There are multiple other people that I could name (Vance is just the closest one to my locker) that make a complete disaster of their lockers. There are also a few people that keep their lockers in tiptop shape. I find that I keep a pretty orderly locker, but if I don’t keep folders, then my locker can get to be a mess, but at the end of the year I don’t tend to use very many bags with stuff in them to take home. I can be messy, and I can be clean, where do you fit?

Class of 2014
by Aysia Harper
We get out of school on the Thursday, May 8, 2014, and the Class of 2014 gets out of school on Thursday, May 1, 2014. The Class of 2014 will graduate on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Moscow High School’s old gym. The class will graduate at 2 o’clock that afternoon.
In the Class of 2014 there is Marki Anton, Jorge Araiza, Cuylor Cross, Daisy Flores, Kendra Haines, Junior Olivas, Morganne Owens, Mathew Pearson, Mandee Saucedo, Codye Walb, and Jasmin Gracia. In the fall Marki will be attending Colby Community College; Jorge doesn’t know where he would like to attend yet, Cuylor will be joining the work force, Daisy will be attending Garden City Community College, Jasmin will be attending Seward County Community College, Kendra will be attending Ottawa University, Junior will be attending Fort Hays State University, Morganne will also be attending Fort Hays State University, Mathew will be attending Cowley County Community College, Mandee will be attending Seward County Community College, and Codye will be attending Barton County Community College.
Their sponsor is Patty Siefried that works at the lunchroom. The Class of 2014 will be going on a senior trip on May 17, 2014 to Myrtle Beach. The class decided where they were going at the beginning of the year, but not all of the class is going on the trip. The ones that are going are Marki, Jorge, Daisy, Kendra, Junior, Mathew, Mandee, Codye, and Jasmin. The Class of 2014 is going to drive to Myrtle Beach because some of them were too scared to fly on the airplane. They decided to drive to save more money, so they could spend more money on the places they were going to and where they stop at along the way and while they are there. They are planning to spend a lot of time at the beach getting tan and meeting new people along the way there and at the beach, and also bonding with the class and making really good memories with each other.

After Prom
by Aysia Harper
After Prom was a blast for most of the students. The parents put a lot of effort into it. They had many different things at After Prom such as jousting, a mechanical bull, basketball, Minute-to-Win-It, Bingo, balloon darts, and this other basketball thing. The other basketball thing, is where four people are strapped in, and there are bungee cords attached to this pole in the middle. If one person tries to go the others can’t; they are all connected.
We started After Prom at about 12:45 and ended at about 4:30 a.m. It was a long and fun night. I think everyone there enjoyed it even the parents working it. They had class competitions on the jousting, mechanical bull, and the basketball thing. In jousting the boys’ sophomore representative Vance Thompson won and for the girls the sophomore representative Carly Fankhouser won. On the basketball the boys’ junior representative Zac Slemp won and for the girls the junior representative Tapanga Dahle won. On the mechanical bull the boys’ sophomore representative Ethan Berry won and for the girls one of the guests won. At around 4:00 a.m., we started the prizes. How the parents did the prizes is they cut playing cards in half and gave one side of the card to us and drew who went next with the other side. That is a pretty creative way to do that. They started with the seniors, went down the grades, and ended with the guests. There were pretty great prizes this year. I think everyone was pretty tired by time we started the prizes.

Summer Driving
by Madison Owens
Anyone who has read all my articles or at least my feature articles may remember that I did an article before Christmas break over winterizing your car. Now I would like to inform you about how to “summerize” your car and no, that is not a summary on your car.
Cooling System
Everyone loves a good air conditioner, but if you don’t get it checked or check it out yourself, you may be wondering why your car is not as cool as it used to be. You will need to check the radiator and any hoses for cracks or leaks and that all of the connections are tight. Also you will need to check the reservoir level, and if it is under half full, add coolant or antifreeze. For the air conditioner, you will need to check the condenser and make sure that the fans are clear of debris. You should also change your coolant annually and use a 50:50 mix of coolant and water.
Tires
In the winter, you need to put on more aggressive tread, but in the summer for more speed, better handling and better fuel efficiency, you need to put on summer tires. Summer tires have a shorter sidewall and a less aggressive tread. You can, though, to save the time and effort, just get a set of all-season tires that are specially made for summer and winter. Also don’t forget that every 6,000 miles your tires need to be rotated and frequently you need to check the air pressure. The hot days and the cool nights can make your tires’ air pressure deteriorate quickly.
Brakes
Unless you know how to check these yourself, you will need to talk to a mechanic. Ask about the state of your brakes; make sure that they are good because especially when they get wet and hot, the system will wear more quickly.
Lights
Don’t forget the lights because night driving in the summer is lots of fun, but not if your lights don’t work. You will need to check the headlights as well as the high beams, the taillights, the turn signals, the reverse lights and horn, and, if your vehicle has them, the fog lights. Make sure that your lights are aligned to shine on the road and not on oncoming cars.
Oil
Check the oil. I know that more driving is done in the summer for most people, and an oil change will most likely need to be done. If you are going to be towing something a higher viscosity of oil will also help. Don’t forget your oil will need to be changed every three months or on older cars 3,000 miles; a newer car can be changed anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 miles (check your car manual for exact numbers).
Other
Other things to be checked include your air filters. Air filters need to be changed every 12,000 miles or six months. Wash your car. In the summer the dirt, salt, sunlight and air pollution can destroy the paint on the car. It is recommended you wash your car weekly, and wax it every six months. Test your battery. The heat will evaporate your battery fluid and damage the internal parts of the battery and a bad voltage regulator will over-charge your battery. Also dirt can become a conductor efficiently draining the battery as well as corrosion accumulation becomes an insulator. The last thing I will tell you that you need to check is your windshield wipers. The wipers are used lots in the winter and when the showers in the summer hit, they may no longer be up to wiping away the water. If when you go to wipe away just little sprinkles and everything is smeared, then it is time to change them.
There may be a lot of things to check, but I would definitely prefer checking them to having a break down in the middle of nowhere. Also if you don’t know how to do some of these things, places like Pep Boys and Advanced Auto Parts may have free checks on a lot of these things. Happy driving.

School
by Madison Owens
I could write about all our achievements this year. I could write about all the hard work we have put into our classes. I could also write about all the things that are still going on. Who really wants to read about those things, though? I am going to write about the end of school and the greatly needed and upcoming summer break.
As of 10 April 2014, we have 18 days of school left. One of those days we get out at 2:30, all of the others, have something going on, whether that is baseball, track, or forensics.
Everyone loves being a kid. If I am wrong, please correct me, but all those fun games that we all played as kids can still be fun. This summer, go play outside, run through the sprinkler, go to the pool, have a water fight or water balloon fight, play hide and seek (that is especially fun in the dark with a lot of people), make a fort out of blankets in the backyard, have camp outs in your yard, make popsicles or ice cream (kudos if the ice cream is handmade), capture the flag (again especially fun in the dark), learn a new hobby like singing, playing an instrument, writing stories or poems or jokes or plays, make a film, learn to paint, play sports, even if it is just in your backyard with a group of friends, make crafts like origami or rainbow crayons or your own play dough, learn to cook, relax, get a job, read, learn a new language, learn new card games, actually go camping, or redecorate.
Okay, so that is a list of about 30 things that you could do this summer. We as high school kids may not have the kind of imagination that we used to have as little kids, but I never said you had to invent your own game (that would be something to do though), but have a little fun. If you don’t have the top notch imagination, start with something already being played and work your way from there. You could write and direct your own play with your friends (if it is good maybe Mrs. Knoll would use it for the school play the next year). I challenge you to actually do something this summer that doesn’t include T.V. or video games and get outside and play. Michelle Obama does have a point, but that doesn’t mean that everyday we need to be outside. I personally loved when my siblings, some other friends and I went out after dark and arranged our own game of hide and seek. You may not like Michelle Obama, but your summer would be so much better if you actually did something and had a little fun with life. Summer breaks are time off from school, so I am challenging you to do something with your summer!

The 80’s
by Madison Owens
Okay, so I realize that no one in high school now lived in the ‘80s. You may hear your parents talk about it and how great it might have been. I think that we could do a little recap of the 80s to see how great or terrible it might have really been.
In 1980, the U.S. failed an attempt to save hostages in Tehran, John Lennon was assassinated, Mount St. Helens erupted, Pac-Man video game was released (that was a good one, even I still play that), Rubik’s Cube became popular (who can really solve one of those without help) and Ted Turner established CNN. In 1981 there was an assassination attempt on the Pope and President Reagan, and Anwar Sadat was assassinated, the first woman was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court (a plus for women), millions watched the royal wedding on T.V., a new plague known as AIDs (weren’t the 80s great) was discovered and the PC was introduced.
In 1982 E.T. was released (I loved that movie as a kid, and I grew up in the early 2000s), King Henry VIII’s ship was raised after 437 years, “Thriller” was released, Reverend Sun Myung Moon married 2,075 couples at Madison Square Garden, and the Vietnam War Memorial was opened.
In 1983 the Cabbage Patch Kids became popular (didn’t last, I wasn’t the biggest fan of those), Reagan announced the defense plan called Star Wars, Sally Ride was the First American woman in space (another plus for women), Soviets shot down a Korean Airliner and the U.S. Embassy was bombed.
1984, there was a huge poison gas leak in India, India’s Prime Minister was killed by two of his own bodyguards, and the PG-13 movie rating was created.
In 1985 there was a famine in Ethiopia, a hole in the Ozone layer was discovered, new Coke hit the market, and the wreck of the Titanic was found.
In 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear disaster (again great decade), the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, the U.S. bombed Libya, and the U.S.S.R. launched Mir Space Station.
In 1987 DNA was used to convict criminals, a Nazi Butcher was sentenced to life, New York Stock Exchange suffered a huge drop, and a West German pilot landed unchallenged in Russia.
In 1988 Pam Am Flight 103 was bombed, and the U.S. shot down an Iranian Airliner.
In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, Exxon Valdez spilled millions of gallons of oil on the coastline, and students were massacred in China’s Tiananmen Square.
Okay, so there were a lot of bad in the 1980s, and there was a lot of good in the 1980s. We do have to remember some of the other things that went on in the 80s like the hairdos, leg warmers, fake jewelry, layers of clothes, arcade games, video games, Mario, and computers. We have to remember some of the music artists like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Prince, Madonna and Queen. Also the movies like Top Gun, Indiana Jones, E.T., Star Wars Episode IV and V, Batman and, one of my favorites, The Breakfast Club. The 80s were a decade of change and development. The 1980s were also a decade of crazy hair and some pretty bad disasters as well as some great achievements and don’t forget Saturday morning cartoons. We may not have lived in the 80s, but it doesn’t hurt to look back on the history of people and see how it has shaped what we think and act like today.

German Exchange Program
by Hailey White
In less than 3 weeks, Maria Cecenas, Hailey White, Kaitlyn Dobie, Madilyn Fleming, Marki Anton, Brock Brazeal, Alexis Manriquez and Brice Valdez will be heading to Germany along with there two sponsors, Mrs. Velvet White and Mrs. Anna Dobie. Most of the group that is going is juniors this year; they have one sophomore going and 1 senior. They will be leaving Friday the 14 and heading to Denver. From there they will be having a straight flight from Denver to Rotenberg, Germany. The flight will be 10 hours long. When they get to Rotenberg, they will be heading to their host families that they will be staying with. They will be spending one week in Germany. While they are there, they are going to be staying with a host family. They have all met one of the family members in the family they will be staying with because Germany exchange students came during the fall and stayed in Moscow for 3 weeks. Also while they are there they will get to go to historical places. They will be going to Point Alpha Memorial and a Concentration camp. Also while they are there, they will get to go to school in Germany. The school is very different than here so it will be interesting. For a few days, they will be in Berlin. They will get to go shopping at the KaDeWe, Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Wall, and many other places that they would like to. They have worked really hard to fundraise money for the trip. They have done car washes, worked at Sonic, have done concessions, sold volleyball stuff and worked at Pizza Hut. They have all worked hard and are so excited to spend their spring break in Germany.

Airplanes
by Madison Owens
Okay, so I could be talking about the Malaysia airplane going down or some of the best things to do on an airplane. I could even be talking about where to go for your next trip on an airplane, but no. I am talking about all the crazy things that people have tried to take on an airplane and what things people have gotten away with taking on an airplane.
You may not know, but it is more likely that you do, about all the things allowed to be taken on airplanes, and all the things not allowed. A few of those things include: sharp objects, sporting goods, guns and firearms, tools, martial arts and self defense items, explosive and flammable material, disabling chemicals and other dangerous items. Some of those categories including box cutters, scissors, baseball bats, pool cues, ski poles, ammunition, compressed air guns, pellet guns, realistic replicas of firearms, cattle prods, drills, wrenches, brass knuckles, nun chucks, blasting caps, flares, aerosol cans (not including those for personal care), gasoline, common lighters, fire extinguishers, bleach, spray paint, flammable liquid, gel candles, as well as living things (this I learned just recently). The list of items goes on and on and gets bigger every year.
Some of the things Americans have tried to take on airplanes include: guns, grenades, human skull fragments and a pepper spray disguised as lipstick, a stun gun in a cane, sword canes, credit card knives, belt buckle knives, comb/brush knives, knives in shoes, thermoses, and in under bag lining: stun guns, mace, throwing stars, grenades, inert pressure plates, initiators, land mines, explosives, and initiation systems. Also some crazy items include: breast pump, spear gun, grenade launcher, cell-phone stun gun,
M-80’s, cannonball, bazooka round, and a machete. One thing that I know was illegal to take on, but was not discovered was a thing under the living things category. My friend knew that it needed to be removed, but forgot and she got home with a piece of seaweed in a jar with water. It may not be the most dangerous thing, but it was still not to be taken on the plane and gave us all a laugh when she pulled out her now black seaweed that I know she still keeps today.
The lesson to be learned from this is to check your baggage well and remember that not a lot of things get past airport security especially when it involves a gun or machete.

Cobalt Crashes
by Amir Granillo
On Saturday, March 22, 2014, there was a car crash in Wisconsin; an eighteen-year-old, Natasha Weigel, and a fifteen-year-old, Amy Rademaker, and seventeen-year-old Megan Ungar-Kerns were involved. Megan Ungar-Kerns was the only girl from the car crash that survived, but she is suffering brain damage. The reason they crashed is because they were in a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. They were driving when the ignition switch turned off, the Cobalt lost power steering, braking and air bags before slamming into a telephone pole box and two trees, according to the people doing the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, filed in a Minnesota District Court, targets GM and the Minneapolis dealership that sold the vehicle, Rosedale Chevrolet, seeking damages of more than $50,000. It comes as the U.S. Justice Department, a Congressional subcommittee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have launched investigations into GM's handling of the crisis. GM CEO Mary Barra, who took the job in January, has ordered an "unvarnished" internal report on what happened, apologized for the accidents, and plans to testify before Congress on April 1. The automaker has not signaled whether it would seek to settle lawsuits or fight them. Some bankruptcy experts say the families have no legal recourse because their accident occurred before GM's Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, which provided legal protection from pre-bankruptcy liabilities.
Some people have been sending their cars to mechanics and back to the company that they got their Chevy Cobalt from to get it fixed and make sure it won’t just shut off on the driver driving the car. Other people have been getting rid of their Chevy Cobalt cars, selling them, and buying new cars because they are scared that they will crash if the car shuts off, and they have no control of it.

Taking the ACT
by Miranda Christensen
It’s almost time for high schoolers to be taking the ACT. The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. The ACT plus writing test includes the four subject area tests plus a 30-minute writing test. All four-year colleges and universities in the U.S accept ACT results. The ACT includes 215 multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete including a short break. Actual testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes. The ACT is administered on six test dates--September, October, December, February, April and June--within the United States, U.S. territories, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The basic registration fee includes score reports for up to four college choices, if you list valid codes when you register. There are national ranks on the ACT. As your score report explains, the ranks show the percent of recent high school graduates who took the ACT and scored at or below each of your scores. You can use it to get a sense of your strengths and weaknesses in the four general subject areas represented by the test scores and in the seven specific areas represented by the sub scores. A high rank in a content area may suggest a good chance of success in related college majors and careers. A low rank may indicate that you need to develop your skills more by taking additional coursework in that area. To get this information I used the website www.actstudent.org.

Prom is Coming!
by Hailey White & Briannah Davidson
Spring Break is just around the corner, so for the juniors that means prom decorating and for the people in charge of After Prom, I hope you’re getting ready. No skiing or vacation for them; no, they will be spending it decorating for prom or preparing for After Prom. Prom will be March 29, 2014 at 7:00 pm. The juniors have put a lot of thought into the theme this year. They even had arguments on what it should be, but they finally came to a decision, and they have chosen “Under the Sea.” So if you are invited, you better be ready to have a blast under the sea.
As usual the Sophomore class will be serving the food at the dinner before the dance starts. The outfits they will be serving in goes along with the Under the Sea theme. The girls will wear colorful shorts, a t-shirt or tank top, and a grass skirt that the Juniors will provide. The boys are wearing swim trunks and white shirt. After everyone is full and the Sophomores get all of the dinner cleaned up, everyone better be ready to get their dance on. The DJ for the night is really good; we have used him for homecoming for several years now.
The decorations for prom will be just as amazing as the music. The juniors have come up with very unique and creative ideas; it will be very interesting to see the final product. The juniors have taken things you would have never used and will make them beautiful. The food for the night is still being decided. But whatever they choose, they say it will be good.
After Prom, which is so far going to be a blast will take place in the high school. Misty Slemp and Kristy Brazeal are in charge of After Prom. Misty said that the city gave her five hundred dollars to spend on it. She also raised money by making a deal with Love Buds. For every tuxedo purchase from a Moscow High School student five dollars was or will be donated to After-Prom. She has said that they have laser tag, mechanical bull, blow up things and booths. They also have many prizes that they will be giving away. The parents will be cooking breakfast for all of the kids that attend After Prom. And to all of the boys or girls who do not want to go to prom, you still can go have fun at After Prom. After-Prom lasts for a very long time. All the way into the next morning! Four o’ clock a.m. is when After-Prom ends. So it sound like March 29 is going to be full of dancing and games. It sounds like a lot of fun and I’m sure everyone will have just that.

What Really Happens in Publications
by Madison Owens
Have you ever wondered how we get what articles we write? What about how we get our ideas for what we write? How do we decide how much to write or when to turn it in? Believe it or not, we do have deadlines and specific articles that we each write.
We have a total of 32 articles that we are assigned to write each two weeks. At the beginning of the quarter we each get new articles. All of the articles are put on the white board, and we all choose one article. We then draw names to decide how to spread out the rest of the articles. Each article is worth a certain amount of points. Some are worth three points; some two and some are only worth one point. We have to have a total of five points. Some people have only two articles that they have to write and some people can have up to five articles they have to write.
Each three-point article has to have a total of at least 400 words to count completely. Each two-point article must be at least a total of 300 words and each one-point article must be at least 200 words.
When we get our articles, every two weeks they are to be done. For the first week we are required to have done two points or to have done three points. That would be like two of the one-point articles or one two-point article.
Sara Pinkham writes, in a two-week period, an editorial and a product review. The editorial is an opinion article. Sara says that she uses things that are going on around school or what kind of laws are being debated about to get what she wants to write for that one. Her product review is just a review of products that are coming out or have come out. She says she usually does that over what different things she has used or what might be helpful to students. Sara says she finds it quite easy to meet her word count requirement and the deadline for both articles, but it can be hard depending on what she is writing each of them over.
Miranda Christensen writes a sixth grade, eighth grade and a teacher/staff spotlight, and a feature. For who she does for the spotlight, she says she looks on the list of students/staff and does whoever is next on the list that hasn’t been done. For her feature, she usually asks people what would be a good topic; it is usually me that she asks. She finds the spotlights easy to reach the word count and the deadline, but it can be a bit harder to come up with ideas for the feature.
Aysia Harper write a tenth grade and second grade spotlight as well as a feature. She also looks on the paper of students to see whom she will do. For her feature, she Googles ideas for a feature and thinks about what is currently happening in and around school. Aysia says that she finds it hard sometimes to meet the word count and deadline for the feature, but the spotlights are pretty easy.
I, myself, write a feature, fourth grade and a kindergarten spotlight. I haven’t had any problems meeting any deadlines, but I do sometimes find it hard to find ideas for the feature.
That is what we do in Publications for the newspaper.
Homecoming
by Kelsi Mueller, Sophomore
Homecoming week Moscow students brought their spirit to school every day of the week. Starting off Monday, everybody wore a shirt that everyone could sign. Then Tuesday was “dress for success.” We all dressed up and looked the best that we could. Wednesday was “pajama day.” Thursday was “superhero day.” Everyone dressed up as his or her favorite superhero. Friday was “black and gold day.” Spirit week gets everyone pumped up for the game Friday night.
During the day Friday the cheerleaders wear the football jerseys. Then there is a big pep rally. Thanks to Kristy Brazeal the booster club put together a homecoming parade. There were a good 5 or 6 floats.
At 6:30 was the coronation. This year’s queen candidates were Senior Kendra Haines, Senior Marki Anton, Junior Maria Cecenas, Junior Kaitlyn Dobie, and Junior Paloma Moran. The king candidates were Senior Jorge Araiza, Senior Junior Olivas, Junior Brock Brazeal, Junior Alexis Manriquez, and Junior Brice Valdez. The queen candidates came around the track in Razors. The homecoming songs were “Speeding Cars” by Imogen Heap, “Highway Don’t Care” by Tim McGraw, featuring Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, and “Stop and Stare” by One Republic.
The homecoming queen was Senior Marki Anton. The homecoming king was Senior Jorge Araiza.
The game started at 7:00 against Deerfield. Coming out of the locker room, the Cats tore through the run through. They had trouble against Deerfield. The first offensive drive for the cats was successful leading to a touchdown making the Cats up 6 to 0. Then Deerfield scored and Moscow never managed to score after that. At the end of the game the fire station put on a fireworks show.

BAsketball Homecoming Week
by Hailey White & Miranda Christensen
This week is homecoming week, Wildcat fans! The cheerleaders have come up with some great ideas to get our school in the spirit this week. Monday is Pajama Day so wear your comfy pajamas and be warm; Tuesday is Hat Day; and Wednesday is Favorite Character Day, so we get to dress up like our favorite character from a movie, a book, or even TV shows. Thursday is Decade Day, where you get to dress up from your favorite decade; it can be the 50s, 60s, etc. Then, of course, Friday is Black and Gold Day so show off you Wildcat Spirit by wearing all the black and gold that you can.
The pep rally that day is going to be so much fun. The cheerleaders are trying to get everyone to participate in it.
Friday night come and watch us play and see the gorgeous girls in their dresses and the boys as well. Friday night we will be playing Fellowship Baptist; they are the Falcons from Liberal. Hopefully, we can win both games that night. The homecoming candidates for basketball include Maria Cecenas, a junior; Kaitlyn Dobie, a junior; Paloma Moran, a junior, Kendra Haines, a senior; and Mandee Saucedo, a senior. For the boys, we have Alexis Manriquez, a junior; Brice Valdez, a junior; Brock Brazeal, a junior; Mathew Pearson, a senior; and Cuylor Cross, a senior. All of the high schoolers voted for basketball homecoming queen and king on Thursday. StuCo has been working really hard to prepare for homecoming. Talley White, Freshmen StuCo Rep said, “All of StuCo worked really hard preparing for Homecoming on Friday.” After the game, we will be having a homecoming dance at the high school.

Student Council sponsors Homecoming
by Briannah Davidson
Student Council is an extracurricular activity for students within schools around the world. The student council in Moscow is mostly in charge of Homecoming. Homecoming is a football and a basketball game in which it is time to celebrate the school you are attending. And after you have graduated, it’s a time to go back “home” or to your town and see old friends and remember your old school days. Here at Moscow we have Homecoming Spirit Week throughout the week, a Homecoming Pep Rally, and of course, the Homecoming game. We determine who is going to be a student council member the year before when the classes vote for who will be their class president, student council members, secretary, treasurer, and so on. If you are a student council member for one year, you can run for an office your junior and senior year. This year the Senior Student Council members are Daisy Flores and Morganne Owens. The two junior members were Kaitlyn Dobie and Brice Valdez. The sophomore was Briannah Davidson, and the freshman was Talley White.
This year’s basketball Homecoming colors are light blue and silver. Friday, the six members get out of class all day to decorate the concessions area (also where the big homecoming dance will be) and the new basketball gym. The student counsel members had to have everything decorated and put up by 2:45 on Friday. That was the time of the Homecoming Pep Rally. We started off by doing the backdrop (where the Homecoming candidates take pictures after the game) black with blue stripes, and the candidates’ names in glitter. Then we made a balloon chandelier for the middle of the dance floor. Somewhere in there we ate pizza and drank a soda (the soda machine is run by the Student Council). We decorated the gym with streamers and a few balloons. All of the decorations were a success. This year’s basketball homecoming was beautiful… thanks to Miss Daniels, Kaitlyn, Morganne, Brice, Briannah, Talley, and Daisy.

Corvette Museum Sink Hole
by Miranda Christensen
In Kentucky on February 18, there was a sink hole that swallowed eight Corvettes at the National Corvette Museum. The sinkhole began to open before 5:45 a.m. when there was no one inside the museum in Bowling Green. The museum said it was alerted to the sinkhole by an alarm company. Firefighters arrived to find a 40 feet wide and 25 to 30 feet deep hole, which had opened up in a large display area called the Sky Dome. Photos from the scene showed at lest two cars in the hole. In all, eight corvettes were affected--six owned by the Museum and two that were on loan from General Motors. The General Motors plant that makes Corvettes is across the street from the Museum. The damaged cars included a 1962 model, a 1994 car listed as “PPG Pace Car,” a 1992 model that was the 1 millionth Corvette made, and a 2009 model that was Corvette number 1,500,000. Also damaged were a 1993 “40th Anniversary Corvette,” a 2001 Mallet Hammer ZO6 model, a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder, and a 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil.” The museum did not release a cost estimate of the damage. Bowling Green is in western Kentucky, an area with geology that has created an abundance of caves, springs and sinkholes.
Gary Mortimer, founder of the National Corvette Restorers Society said, “Many of the museum’s cars are the only ones of their kind left and would be very difficult to replace.” Crews in Kentucky are adding extra support to the building and taking out a wall to make room for a crane. They are also cutting holes into the floor and filling them with concrete at key points for even more support. Then the crane will be used to pull the cars out of the sinkhole. Officials heading up the project say the first two Corvettes that were gobbled up still haven’t been seen and could have been buried by soil. They expect the recovery process to take two weeks. If you go to Kentucky sometime soon, be careful.

Twilight Shift
by Madison Owens
How many people do you know that work the evening or night shift and still have to get up and go to school the next morning? A night shift is different for each job, typically for fast food places it is from five p.m. to 11 p.m. Most places will schedule you till 11, but you are still there working at one in the morning.
I work at Pizza Hut in Hugoton and don’t usually work past nine, but many teens I work with do work the late hours at work. We close at ten on weeknights, but the closing shift can be there till midnight or later.
Most people think that they just miss a little bit of sleep, but that little bit can wreck havoc on your health. Everyone has an internal clock that tells him or her when it is time to sleep and when it is time to be awake. Very few people can actually fully adjust to such off schedules, making it very common to suffer from shift work sleep disorder (SWSD).
SWSD is insomnia and excessive sleepiness. People with SWSD are more accident prone, irritable and less able to concentrate. Lack of sleep is also linked to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mood disorders. These shifts may cause all these things, but the shifts still need someone to work them. People who work twilight shifts also tend to change the sleeping patterns needed for a good nights sleep. The REM sleeping period as well as the second sleep stage can both be shortened. Other problems with working the night shift are mental health and cardiovascular disorders. So I found some ways to adjust to or handle odd work hours.
1. Shift Slowly: Don’t expect to be able to spend one night on a schedule and not be tired the next day. It can take two days to a week for your circadian rhythm to adapt.
2. Resist Caffeine: The caffeine boost used is going to do more bad than good. The caffeine will give shift workers more trouble in getting to sleep after work. Milk and water are good substitutes for that habit.
3. The Home Front: You need to have support at your home to be able to handle the night shift hours. You can’t go home and be able to get up really early in the morning to have some family time.
4. Practice Makes Perfect: Keep your sleep schedule regular. Get and keep a sleep schedule and a dark, quiet room to sleep in and don’t sleep too much.
5. Get it in Writing: If you do have a disorder because of your working schedule, get a note from your doctor and talk to your employer about changing shifts. Sometimes the change in shifts can be good for everyone.
Fatigue can be terrible for everyone and anyone. Most high school jobs are not that late, but some of these habits can be good if you do end up with a night job sometime down the road. Good luck. J

Forensics
By Briannah Davidson
The new 2014 Forensic Season is here! The meet at Holcomb went well. So far there were two meets in January, three meets in February, one meet in March, for sure, one meet in April, and maybe two. The forensics team will travel to Holcomb, Southwestern Heights, Scott City, Syracuse, Lakin, Rolla, Deerfield, and maybe Meade. They are all scheduled on Saturdays except for two, which are scheduled on a Thursday. The forensic coach, Tina White, has been coaching forensics for four years. Forensics has never had so many people in it, or at least while Mrs. White has been coaching. The team consists of high school students. They are Senior Marki Anton; Juniors Hailey White, Zachary Pierson, and Brice Valdez; Sophomores Briannah Davidson, Kelsi Mueller, Yari Maldonado, Alex Pierson, Sammir Martinez, and Vance Thompson; Freshmen Talley White, Maggie White, and Rachel Pierson.
The team participates in six categories all together. They are Prose, Extemp, Humorous Solo Act, Duet Acting, IDA, Poetry, Prose, Informative, and Impromptu (which is not a 1A category but we were competing with 4A schools, so we could enter it). At the Holcomb meet on January 23, 2014, the team did very well for a first meet. The following placed in the finals at the meet: Maggie White and Vance Thompson with their Duet Act, Vance also placed in Extemp, Kelsi Mueller in the Prose category, and Alex Pierson in Impromptu. Making the finals at this forensics meet was very impressive because we were competing against 6A students and students from a lot of different schools. Forensics has already taken off with a very great start. Last year Moscow High School took five students to Wichita for state competition. The team hopes to get there with all thirteen students!

Sickness in School
by Zachary Pierson
During the year of 2013 several people have been getting sick at school. For some people, getting sick is just old news, and for some it is just starting to hit them, others have been getting sick over and over again, there are still some lucky people who have not been affected at all. With all this sickness going around, how can you stay ahead of this sick bug? Here is what the South Shore Medical Center had to say.
If you see someone sick do the sensible thing and keep your distance. People who are sick should not be out in public areas anyway unless the doctor tells them they are not contagious. Viruses spread through the air, and if someone is coughing with you around, you are just breathing all of those viruses right in and risk getting sick yourself. Another way viruses spread is through personal contact.
Wash your hands.
Bacteria can survive on doorknobs, keyboards, and other common objects. If you touch these things and then you touch your mouth or nose, you will probably get sick. Wash your hands after you use these items in a public place.
Avoid sharing.
I know sharing is something you have learned to do since preschool, but you should draw the line at mugs, cups, and utensils. Wash the dishes after you use them, and let someone else use them. Your friend may not look sick today, but you never know for sure.
Try to stay healthy.
To avoid getting sick try to eat healthy. What this means is to avoid eating McDonald’s for every meal, besides Sonic is better anyway. You should also stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. You should also try and get plenty of sleep at night.
Get your flu shot.
Not everyone gets a flu shot and everyone has a reason to get one or not get one. What I usually hear is when people get a flu shot, they end up getting the flu. If you are one of these people who keep getting your flu shot and if you usually get the flu, stop getting the flu shot. If you usually don’t get a flu shot and you never get sick, don’t worry about a flu shot.
According to Mr. Moore at the Moscow High School, 15 students have been gone per day because they were sick. At the Junior High 15 students have been gone per day also because they were sick. The average for staff that have been gone because they have been sick has been on average around 2 staff members. To help the sickness to stop spreading the Moscow School systems should just have a couple of sick days, so that everyone can just become well again.

Christmas Destinations
by Madison Owens
Where did you go for Christmas break? Do you like to go somewhere colder, or somewhere warmer? Do you visit relatives or do relatives visit you? Do you always go the same places each year, or is it different every year?
On CNN there is a list of the ten best cities for a winter vacation. The top one on the list is Prague in the Czech Republic. Surprisingly, Prague is almost tourist-free in the winter months. Prague is almost fairytale like with its snowcapped mountains, cobbled streets, stunning architecture and gas street lamps all covered with a sheet of snow.
Next is Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is perfect for a winter break with is Christmas carols and traditional markets. The main market is held in shadow of the Salzburg’s Hohensalzburg fortress, but the one in Mirabell Square is popular with the foodies coming to sample all the delicacies.
Tromso, Norway is next with one of the best views of the Northern Lights. There are multiple museums just right for the Christmas mood, such as the Polar Museum and the Tromso Museum.
Although in Amsterdam the museums are empty, the time has come to visit the attractions such as Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House. Also the circus featuring athletes from Russia, North Korea and China.
Nagano, Japan is fifth on the list with its ski resorts, hot springs and the snow-covered Buddhist temples.
Reykjavik, Iceland may be cold, but has plenty of hot springs to warm up with. In February there is also the annual Winter Lights Festival. Visitors can try multiple different winter sports including ice skating and soaking in the geothermal swimming pool.
Berlin also makes the list with pre-Christmas retail therapy. Markets at multiple places provide everything from miniature trains to handcrafted goods to candles to candy stores.
Ottawa, Canada holds one of the world’s largest winter festivals and is famous for ice sculptures, outdoor concerts and toboggan courses. Christmas Lights Across Canada runs from December fifth to January seventh has everything decked out in Christmas lights.
Washington, D.C. makes the list with the enormous 30-foot Christmas tree at the Union Station. The ZooLights show at the National Zoo opens late to stage spectacular light shows. The White House and the Lincoln Memorial is something to see in the snow as well as the Washington Ballet staging performances of the Nutcracker.
Last on the list, but certainly not least, is Edinburgh, Scotland. Cobbled streets, beautiful castles and lovely public gardens are more beautiful in winter than any other time of the year. Princes Street Gardens are transformed into wonderlands with ice skating rinks, an enormous Christmas tree and a Ferris Wheel in the shadow of the castle. Arthur’s seat is one of the perfect places for a winter walk being almost second to none.
I would never miss a chance to see any of these. While remembering the real purpose of Christmas think about some of great places to go because I know that I certainly will consider some of these trips if I ever get the chance.

Christmas Meaning
by Kendra Haines
What is Christmas to people? Does it mean food, presents, or Santa Claus? The true meaning of Christmas has been lost in all the commotion of presents and Santa. Christmas to me always has meant spending time with family, eating yummy food, and great stories! Yes, we should remember that the true meaning is Jesus. My family does worship for a bit as well but usually families just open gifts and enjoy each other’s presence.
About 95% of American’s celebrate Christmas each year according to a recent Gallup poll. Also up to 80%+ of non-Christian American’s celebrate Christmas, which is really interesting especially since it is a Christian holiday!
The usual set up for Christmas means lights, the tree, buying gifts, and wrapping those gifts and putting them under the tree. Also my most favorite thing to do is put up my stockings. I don’t know why I enjoy this so much, but I have always enjoyed it and it is the one thing that I look forward to Christmas morning.
Here are some facts about Christmas.
“Christmas is celebrated on the 25 of December and commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Christmas is derived from the Old English word ‘Cristes maesse’ which literally translates to Christ’s Mass.” (Christmasfacts.net)
Santa Claus became a part of the Christmas tradition around the Middle Ages; however, his part in Christmas was not popularized until after he was depicted as a jolly, stout, old man wearing a red and white suit in the 19th century. Celebrants all over immediately captured this figure of Santa. The character of Santa Claus is said to be inspired by Saint Nicholas of Myra, a bishop, who went around giving the poor children of his village gifts. The legend of Santa centers on the North Pole and his magical workshop of elves. Every year he makes presents for those children who were nice. Those who were naughty received nothing but a lump of coal. The figure of Santa has become inseparable from the tradition of Christmas on a whole. (Christmasfacts.net)
We need to remember though Christmas is not about the gifts or the big red man in a suit, but it is about Jesus Christ and his arrival to this earth. We have this holiday to celebrate Him, and He is the reason for the season!

Christmas Decorating Disaster
by Madison Owens
Who doesn’t love to decorate for the holidays or even to just see all those Christmas decorations? Have you ever thought about some of the dangers of decorating for Christmas?
More than 80% of Americans decorate for the holidays. On average Christmas trees are the cause of 240 home fires with a related 13 deaths, 27 injuries and $16.7 million in property damage. Also natural Christmas trees are more likely to cause fires than artificial ones especially if they are let to dry out. Christmas tree fires are also more likely to result in death than other home fires. In most cases, electrical failures and malfunctions are the cause, also putting the tree near a heat source. Personally, this makes me think a little more about where I am going to place my tree this year and check the lights first.
On average there are about 150 home fires as a result of holiday lights with an average of eight deaths, 14 injuries, and $8.5 million of property damage. Usually the cause is electrical failures or malfunctions. This makes me kind of glad that we don’t put up too many lights.
Now another thing to be covered on the lights is what is in the lights. Most lights are tinted with toxins, including lead. In California it is required that there is a warning label stating that that the lights carry lead. These chemicals have been seen to cause developmental problems and are particularly dangerous to young kids.
What about falling while putting up the lights and decorations? Well about 5,800 people are sent to the emergency room each year. Most injuries are the result from falling off a ladder or falling off the roof. Also occasionally falls from tripping on furniture or the tree skirt.
Another danger is spray-on snow. It is great to shake a can and spray to get a frosty look, but many contain an assortment of chemicals, such as acetone and methylene chloride. Nausea, headache and lightheadedness are symptoms that can result from inhaling this ‘snow’.
Also the top three days for candle fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Need I say more? People just need to not put their candles near anything flammable.
If you have infants, you need to know that most love to get into the tinsel. If you have children don’t put your small ornaments near the ground in reach of kids. This also goes for pets. I have had more than one cat and dog get into the ornaments on our trees.
Please be careful this holiday season. Don’t let your trees dry out, don’t fall off the ladder, make sure your lights won’t malfunction, don’t use spray-on snow, watch where you put your candle,s and don’t let kids or pets get into the tinsel. Have a great holiday season, but be careful.

This year we have added the MTSS program to our school. The MTSS stands for Multi Tier Systems of Support. Almost every teacher has an MTSS class. Some of the teachers are Mr. Bixler, Mrs. Pierson, Miss Daniels, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Knoll, and Mr. Traub. To be put into groups, there is a Tier1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. Ones are your best readers. Mr. Bixler has a group of Tier 1 high school students. In this class, you will read articles off the Internet and answer questions over the articles. Some of the articles that they have read have been from the book What’s Your Dangerous Idea by John Brockman. Some have been about sports, How golf saved my life, animal and human rights, bioethics, and parental influence. Miss Daniels also has a group of Tier 1 high school students. Right now they are reading theater plays. They are going to make props, learn their lines and when they have it all made up, they are going over to the elementary school and perform it. The next teacher that has a high school Tier 1 group is Mr. Traub. His group of students is reading the Bible. They read most of the hour; then he has them answer questions about what they read. They will also discuss it after they get done with their questions. Mrs. Pierson has a group of junior high and high school students. She has a Tier 2 & 3 group. The students in her group are doing phonics. Phonics is going over what the sounds of the letters make and when you put two letters together that sometimes it changes the sound of the letters. Mrs. Thompson also has a junior high and high school group. They are working on their fluency. Fluency is being able to read so many words and not making mistakes or not putting any extra words. She gives her students a sheet of paper with an article on it, they have one minute to read as many words as they can. They test every other week, and if their scores go, up then eventually they will be moved to Tier 1. Mrs. Knoll and Mrs. May teach vocabulary to their students. They also have junior high and high school students. They teach this to Tier 2 & 3 students. This program is really helping the students be able to read faster and better.
Paul Walker
by Amir Granillo
On December 1, 2013, there was a devastating car crash in Southern California on Saturday afternoon and in the car was the actor Paul Walker. He was 40 years old when he died in that fiery car crash. Paul Walker was in the passenger seat of a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT; the car was driven by a racing team partner. He was going 40 in a 15 mph limit zone; that’s when they slammed into a light pole and burst into flames in an office park. It was only about thirty miles away from Hollywood. They were trying to make the curve. Paul Walker was one of the main characters on all of the Fast and Furious movies they made. Paul Walker played Brian O'Conner. According to the Internet Movie Database, Walker was to appear in Fast & Furious 7. They were already in the process of shooting the movie when the accident happened. He had already made six previous Fast and Furious movies. Walker starred in other films, including the crime thriller Running Scared, the Antarctic adventure Eight Below, Into the Blue and Takers. Police initially investigated if drag racing played a role, but were unable to find evidence of a second car's involvement. I think they will still finish the filming of Fast & Furious Seven, but they will have to find someone to fill in for his spot or take him out of the movie. Numerous friends and movie stars have posted tributes to Walker on social media. People were sad because they wanted to see the new Fast & Furious Seven, but they do not know if they will still finish the movie with Paul Walker’s death.

German Exchange
by Brock Brazeal, Junior
The Moscow students will be traveling to Germany on their break during spring. The students who are going to Germany are Brice Valdez, Alexis Manriquez, Brock Brazeal, Hailey White, Kaitlyn Dobie, Maria Cecenas, and Madilyn Fleming. The sponsors for the trip are Velvet White and Anna Dobie. The Moscow students have to make a video for American night when they go to Germany to show what life is like over here. The Germans usually have a play and video every year they come to America and perform for German Night. The Moscow students have been working really hard on their fund raising for their expenses for the trip. The students’ fundraisers included the Fourth of July lunch, snow cone stand, two car washes, carhopping at Sonic, being a waiter at Pizza Hut, cleaning for the Pheasant Haven dinner, and selling McDonalds gift cards. The Moscow students will be staying with their German student that they hosted when they came. The Moscow students will be going to Jakob Grimm School in Rotenburg, Germany.

Shopping—an obsession?
by Kendra Haines, Senior
Everyone likes to shop! We’ve all gone to the mall and spent way more money than we should have. There is always that one person though that you think might really have a shopping addiction! Hey, I might even call myself a shopaholic. I absolutely love to shop and maybe a little too much sometimes. Trust me they’re out there. Those people who can’t control what they are doing; this syndrome is called oniomania or shopaholism. Compulsive shopping is considered to be an impulsive control disorder.
Even though this disorder can be very harmful to your wallet, it is not considered a mental illness because it doesn’t do any real harm (physically).
Shopaholism often has roots in early experience, with failed parent-child transactions leading people to turn to objects to fill the sense of void and empty identity. People hear about these children all the time, but most of the time when kids feel neglect from their parents, they turn to food and not going out and buying things for them to feel special. Coming to “feel special,” there are three main symptoms to shopaholism:
1. Over-preoccupation with buying.
2. Distress or impairment as a result of the activity.
3. The compulsive buying is not limited to hypomanic or manic episodes.
Social conditions also play a key role in oniomania or shopaholism; the rise in more money available to one’s credit card, the more temptation you have to go out and get you something to make you feel better about yourself (Wikipedia).
So say you had a fight with a friend, if you have this disorder, you are definitely more likely to go out and get you a new outfit to make yourself feel better and not “think” about the fight!
You would think that this disorder is more commonly found in women, right? Well you thought wrong. This disorder is found mostly in pathological gambling addicts. Yes, women are next in line for having this disorder, but it is not known only in women.
Treatment for this disorder includes: becoming conscious of the addiction through studying, therapy, group work, etc. Research done by Michel Lejoyeux and Aviv Weinstein suggests that the best possible treatment for shopaholism is through cognitive behavioral therapy. They suggest that a patient first be “evaluated for psychiatric morbidity, especially depression, so that appropriate pharmacological treatment can be instituted.” Their research proves that patients who received cognitive behavioral therapy over 10 weeks had reduced episodes of compulsive buying and spent less time shopping as opposed to the patients who did not receive this treatment.
So lastly, my question to you is, are you a shopaholic? Do you have this disorder?

Freshmen Fears
by Kendra Haines, Senior
All incoming freshmen both college and high school students. I mean who wouldn’t it’s a new experience and you some times don’t know what you are getting yourself into. Yes, college freshmen might have a little more stress than the high school freshmen, but some times that is most definitely not the case. In college you can be whoever you want to be; there are different groups you can be in and many different options in college where in high school you have to try to fit in with the “cool” group or fit in with whoever is cool at that moment, and that is sometimes not the easiest thing in the world to do!
The most common fears of a first year college student are just being scared to leave home, being smart enough, liking their roommates, making friends, and missing home; students also worried about dealing with the party scenes, having sex, covering costs, and being safe in general. But the most common and most said fear is “Am I smart enough for college?” Students who get straight A’s and B’s and maybe even C’s worry about keeping those good grades and achieving what they plan on doing in life and maybe even if they chose the right major because students sometimes don’t realize that they always have the chance to change their major. Students worry about this because they hear all about how college is so much more difficult than high school and have even more difficult professors to deal with.
Three big things that college students need to know to get them through classes are organization, time management and getting to know your professors.
Your student needs to know:
· “A semester-long calendar created from syllabi on Day 1 of classes will work wonders—if it’s followed.”
· “You often do not have to read every word of those 150- page assignments—once you learn how to scan, concentrate and read parts that seem important.”
· “If you take an 8 a.m. class, make sure it’s in something that interests you, or you’ll just go back to sleep.”
· “You can still lose nine pounds of hair stressing out over exams.” (Mary Kay Shanley and Julia Johnston)
Now for high school freshmen. The most common fear here is to meet new people and if those people will like you or not! Another is upperclassmen, these scary people are always so darn intimidating that it makes it hard in not only class but sports as well.
Hopefully, you don’t have any of these worries. Just live life and be stress free!

Moscow Hosts Sub-State Volleyball
by Kelsi Mueller, Sophomore
This year’s high school volleyball sub-state tournament is being hosted at Moscow. Moscow has never hosted sub-state for volleyball.
There will be five teams at sub-state—Moscow, Fowler, Rolla, Ingalls, and Tribune. The first game starts at 2:00 pm. The first two teams to play are Tribune and Rolla. Going into the tournament, Fowler is the top team. So the Fowler Goldbugs will play the winner out of Rolla and Tribune. The second team in the tournament is the Moscow Lady Wildcats. So they will play the number three team Ingalls.
The day started off with Rolla and Tribune. Winning in two sets, the Rolla Pirates move on to play the number one team Fowler Goldbugs. The Lady Pirates did not start the game well, losing the first set in a blow out. The next set the Lady Pirates came on strong almost getting a win to take the Lady Goldbugs in to the third set. The Fowler Goldbugs come out on top in two sets. The next game was against the Moscow Lady Cats and the Ingalls Bulldogs. The Cats started off soft losing the first set. But they came into the second set strong; the Lady Cats almost had a win in their second set. They only needed one more point, and then the Lady Bulldogs came back for the win in two sets, moving them into the championship game against the Fowler Goldbugs.
Starting the championship game, the Ingalls Bulldogs and the Fowler Goldbugs were introduced. The gym was loud. Coming on strong ready to play was the Lady Bulldogs. Blowing out the Lady Goldbugs, Ingalls was setting up their big girl, who was hitting it hard. The Lady Goldbugs couldn’t get the dig. The Lady Goldbugs came into the second set determined to get the win. Working together, hitting it right back at the Lady Bulldogs, the Fowler Lady Bugs came out on top. The middle of the third game was 15 to 15; the Lady Goldbugs had a couple mistakes. They lost their communication and it all went downhill from there. The Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Goldbugs for our 1A division. The Lady Bulldogs headed to state last Friday, hoping for the win on Friday to be able to play Saturday.

Preparing for Winter Driving
by Madison Owens, Sophomore
Defensive driving is very important. Car accidents are the number one cause of death during winter storms. Learning how to maneuver your vehicle when confronted with winter’s elements could mean the difference between being in a snow bank on the side of the road or arriving at your destination.
Driving Tips for Snowy and Icy Roads
*Before you go, listen to radio announcements for accidents, road closings, and road advisories. Or you can call your local highway patrol if the information is not available on the radio.
*Plan your route ahead of time to avoid dangerous roads during bad weather. If the road is closed or blocked, do not attempt to continue on this road.
*Let someone know your route because if you do get stranded, your family can alert the authorities and they know where to start looking.
*Be careful, bridges and overpasses freeze before the road. Slow down before to avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.
*Always be gentle when driving in bad weather. Accelerate gently, turn gently, brake carefully and early, and avoid quick unexpected movements to spin you in a spin. Leave ample room between you and the next car. Always anticipate: turns, stops and lane changes.
*Don’t go too slow either though. The car needs momentum to push through heavier snow without getting stuck.
*Stay clear of trucks. They are heavier and need considerably longer stopping distances and their tires tend to spray snow and rain into parallel lanes, hindering your visibility.
*If your vehicle has four-wheeled drive or all-wheel drive, do not rely on its ability to get you out of tough situations. The traction does assist you in getting to where you are going but does not help at all in stopping, and these are generally heavier vehicles and require more stopping time and braking power to actually stop.
*Always use your lights through the rain, snow, and fog.
Winter Car Accidents
*If you are in a skid, steer carefully and don’t overreact to keep control of the car. If your car has antilock brakes systems (ABS), the brakes will automatically pump in skid situations. The brake will pulse. If your car doesn’t have an ABS then apply easy pressure in pumping motion to brakes.
*If you are in an accident, try to get as far to the right of the side of the road as possible and away from traffic.
*Stay in your car and put on your hazard lights.
*If you can, use a flare to call attention to your vehicle. You can also tie a bright piece of cloth to the antenna.
*If you are stuck in snow, straighten wheels, and accelerate slowly. Don’t spin the tires or you will dig yourself deeper. You can rock the vehicle back and forth to use the weight and momentum to get unstuck.
*Run the engine only a few minutes at a time if you are stuck so you can stay warm. Crack the window occasionally for fresh air. Keep the exhaust pipe clear to avoid the carbon monoxide fumes from creeping back in.
*If the weather is too hazardous, the AAA and FEMA recommend staying off roads. Not knowing how to maneuver your car through a winter storm can jeopardize you, your passengers, and others on the roads.
*Get your car ready for winter; anticipate and avoid dangerous circumstances to help keep you safely on the road and in control.

Forensics
by Hailey White, Junior
Forensics is not where we looking at dead bodies or fingerprints. Forensics is like a club; there are different categories that you can do like IDA, Duet, Prose, Solo, and Informative.
You’re probably wondering what in the world are all of these. Well, IDA is Improvised Duet Act. In IDA, 2 students draw 2 characters, a situation and a location. Based off those 3, they have 30 minutes to prepare. Then they go into a room where they will get several minutes to perform their skit in front of judges. The judges will then judge their skit on how well it was, and if they understood it or if it was all thrown together. Duet is where you and your partner memorize a skit, and you have to perform it in front of a judge. They get 10 minutes to perform it. Prose is where you read a story in front of a judge; you will get 7 minutes to read it. Solo Acting is you can do a funny act or a serious one; you have to memorize a play and act it out alone in front of a judge. You will get 10 minutes to perform it in front of a judge. Last but not least, is Informative that is you will get 7 minutes to tell the judge about something in the world.
We have 15 kids going out for forensics: Madison, Madilyn, Marki, Alex, Cruz, Vance, Maggie, Hailey, Talley, Zachary, Carley, Briannah, Kelsi, Brice and Yari. The sponsor is Mrs. White. We have about 7 meets and maybe even more. It just depends on what schools decide to put on a meet. So far we are going to Holcomb on January 25, Liberal on February 1, Rolla on March 1, Spearville on March 11, Huguton on April 5, Regionals on April 12, and State on May 3. Depending on how good we do at these meets will tell us if we qualify for state or not.

Halloween
by Kendra Haines, Senior
Almost all of us love and celebrate Halloween; children look forward to dressing up and being something they can’t be in everyday life. Halloween has been around for centuries, but only some years ago though did we start celebrating it as a fun holiday and not a night of the dead. Halloween didn’t become an American holiday until the immigration from the British Isles in the late nineteenth century. (Answer.yahoo.com)
The name “Halloween” comes from All Saints Day a celebration of the early Christian church that sat aside a day for the solemn remembrance of martyrs. Some people embraced the holiday as a haunting, or a time for the dead, or even maybe a time to practice communication with the dead. People thought of it as a time to maybe reconnect with their loved ones that had past, but those who disagreed with the holiday thought of it as a time for the devil and a worship time for the demons, such as witchcraft.
“There shall not be found among you anyone, who uses divination, one, which practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For whoever does these things are detestable to the Lord” (vv. 10-13).
Some simple facts about Halloween are the following: Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween, right? Well that is because orange is the symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest season.
