Mr. McKinney is this week’s staff spotlight. Mr. McKinney is the new 7-12 social studies teacher. He has been teaching at Moscow for one year. He enjoys teaching at Moscow because he loves to watch the students grow and develop into well-rounded adults. Watching students achieve personal goals is soul warming to him. When I asked Mr. McKinney if he planned on teaching at Moscow for a while his response was “as long as they will have me.”
Mr. McKinney is happily married and has two children. He has a son named Brayden who is ten, and a daughter named Lily who is five. When Mr. McKinney is not teaching he likes to play golf, hunt, fish, and play guitar. He is also the assistant coach for the Moscow High School boys' baseball team. He enjoys coaching because baseball is a laid-back sport compared to most sports.
Mr. McKinney attended college at Fort Hays State University. His first major was in business but then he realized that it wasn’t for him. Mr. McKinney hasn’t always wanted to be a teacher believe it or not, he wanted to be a rock star. When Mr. McKinney graduated from college, he was a substitute teacher for a year and half at U.S.D 489. Mr. McKinney’s proudest moment was when he received his college diploma. When I asked Mr. McKinney what his dream job would he responded with “I have it.”
The thing Mr. McKinney likes most about living in Moscow is the feeling of the community. He said “I have lived in urban areas where there are many people and you often feel like you are one, but in Moscow I feel like one of many.”
Back in Mr. McKinney’s high school days he played football, baseball, and he also wrestled. He continued to wrestle throughout college. He now participates on the co-ed volleyball and softball team here in Moscow.
His best high school memory is winning the team title at state his senior year in wrestling. The funniest thing that has happened so far this year for Mr. McKinney is when a student pulled out a piece of fried chicken from his pocket and started eating it during class.
Mr. McKinney loves his job, and he can’t wait until next year!
