In Beatrice Prior’s life in Chicago, the dystopian Chicago society is divided into five factions; each faction helps to keep the city moving and running fashionably with out fighting. The five factions are the following: Dauntless, the brave ones; Amity, the peaceful; Erudite, smart and intelligent people; Abnegation, the selfless; and Candor, the ones who are honest.
When Beatrice turns 16, she takes an aptitude test which is supposed to help her decide where she best fits in, in the society. When her test is “inconclusive” it doesn’t help her to decide where she fits in, now she has to decide between staying with her family and going to the faction where she really belongs.
But she has a secret that she isn’t suppose to tell anyone. The faction she chooses surprises her and everyone else; only one other person has ever left their faction.
Now after choosing her faction, she is out to prove her self, but she has to do it in a way that she won’t get discovered. If what she is, is discovered they would kill her. They look at people who have this quality to be an upset in the society.
During initiation she isn’t doing well at first, but as the time goes by, she gets better and better.
She meets someone who she starts to like, and he likes her. He gives her advice on how to be better at things and how to pass them without getting noticed. But he doesn’t do it for everyone else; she thinks he has a secret like hers, but she isn’t sure and doesn’t want to ask in case she is wrong.
When they are given something that takes their ability to think and move on their own, it doesn’t effect her, but once she figures out what’s going on, she has to act normal, so her secret won’t be discovered.
