On a scale from 1-10, I would give this book a 9. Veronica Roth is the author of the Divergent trilogy. Divergent was first published April 25, 2011. Divergent is being made into a movie and will be released on March 21, 2014. Divergent is usually compared to The Hunger Games trilogy and The Maze Runner trilogy because they are all written for the same age group and are of the same genre. The Divergent trilogy and The Hunger Games trilogy are alike and different in these ways, Divergent and The Hunger Games are both in the future, and they have a land divided into factions/districts that are responsible for a certain skill/resource for the whole country. They are different because Divergent is just about one city, which is Chicago, and The Hunger Games is about the whole USA. Another difference is that in the Divergent series, characters do not have to worry about being a tribute and do not have to worry about participating in a “games”. Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, and James Dashner must all have insecurity issues about where all the USA is headed because they are all American writers. Anyway, I digress...
Divergent is about a girl, Beatrice Prior, who is in the city of Chicago. All have the same paradigm that the citizens of city are keeping other creatures out. No one believes that they are being kept in except for one, named Four. He works in the security part of Dauntless, which is one of the five factions of the city.
All of the factions include Dauntless, Amity, Abnegation, Candor, and Erudite. The city was founded on the basis that there was something wrong with all of mankind and that they were the last ones on the face of the earth and that the city fence was the end. That nothing was beyond.
The factions were all created because they thought that something was wrong with humanity. The Dauntless faction was formed by those who believed cowardice was to blame, the Amity faction was formed by those who blamed war and fighting, the Abnegation faction was formed by those who blamed selfishness, the Candor faction was formed by those who blamed deception and duplicity, and finally the Erudite faction. They were formed on the belief that human ignorance was to blame.
One specified day of the year, all of the 16-year-olds would have to decide what faction they wanted to be a part of for the rest of their lives. To help them decide what faction they belong in, they partake in an aptitude test that will tell them what faction they belong in. One choice changes their whole lives after that.
Some however belong in more than one. They are called the Divergent. Meaning that they are a well-rounded person and don’t conform and are killed as a consequence. As you can tell it is dangerous being Divergent.
I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoyed reading The Hunger Games. Divergent is funny, sad, romantic, and adventurous. It is literally the perfect read for anybody. Once you pick this book up, you will not set it down.
