Have you ever been verbally abused over and over again? Do you look at yourself in the mirror and see someone ugly staring back at you? Do you get excited to go to school because your home life is so bad? Well… this book is about a girl who has been verbally abused for years, and she puts herself down every day because of it. In this book you’ll get emotionally attached and won’t want to put it down.
The main character in this book is Charlie; she is a senior in high school and has moved around her whole life. Charlie lives with her mom and dad; they recently just moved to a new town and Charlie is starting all over at another school. She is not very excited about going to a new school but it’s better than staying at home. As she is walking into the school she is hit with the door and goes flying on her butt, when she looks up she see’s the cutest guy ever standing in front of her asking her if she is okay. This guy is Maverick. Maverick is the sweetest and most popular guy at that school. Every girl wants to date him, but he hasn’t found anyone he is interested in until now. Maverick told her that she is beautiful when he saw her, but Charlie doesn’t think she is so she says no and walks away. Maverick couldn’t believe that she would say that because to him she was stunning, but he could tell something was wrong with her because she looked sad.
Charlie ends up finding a best friend Tori, who always has her back. Maverick finally got Charlie to go out with him, but first he has to meet her parents. At Charlie’s home that night Maverick came over, her dad made fun of her while her mom sat back and just watched. Maverick hated that; he started to fall in love with Charlie after that. But Maverick gets hurt and pushes her away. Charlie ends up finally yelling back at her dad and finally standing up for her self. Her dad hits her and tells her that she isn’t his. After hearing that she left and she ends up living with Tori. Maverick tries to get back with her, but she needs to figure out life and how to feel good about herself. At the end of the book she was graduating and she was happy and when she looked in the mirror she saw a beautiful girl staring back.
I love this book; it teaches you to love yourself no matter what others say. You will never know why people put each other down until you know the whole story and that’s what I learned from this book. I encourage everyone to read it; you will not regret it.
